Red Dead Redemption 2 (dunkview)

I feel like people don't get why dunkey dislike the second half like "remember Karen she's one of the important characters in the camp yeah she died or something i dunno here's a native guy you never even meet that needs your help" like wtf that's my biggest issue to just how it dulls you in on something insignificant instead of focusing the main thing. Except for Arthur kicking out strauss, the talk with the sister on the station(the secret scene) and the ending I feel like every main mission in the second half felt unnesacary

The best story ive ever had out of a game

I always felt the second half of the game was like that on purpose. Dutch is fully unhinged and the mission he sends you have you become more disillusioned to what his plan is for both Arthus and the player. The finale is Arthur finally having enough and trying to give John a last shot at redemption.

It’s okay Dunkey. We know you’re wrong sometimes but are afraid to admit it.

I just don’t like how players get to choose how to play Arthur Morgan. It sounds weird saying it out loud but if Arthur’s story was meant to be honorable and full of redemption, then let the story be about that. People get into a giant argument about Arthur’s death and how good and righteous he lived in his final days. But that’s if players decided to play him that way. Having multiple endings convolutes the main story and makes players ask what is canon and what is not. And if dying peacefully on top of a mountain while saving John was the canon ending, then why have an an entire separate ending where Micah kills Arthur back at camp?

Multiple endings mean that either everything is canon or nothing is. And Red Dead redemption 2 was simply a fanfic.

No one likes the island

On my first playthrough I slowed way, way down in the later chapters, making sure I took the time to soak in the environment and take a big bite out of the 100%. On later playthroughs I noticed how repetitive the endgame missions are, just shooting, shooting, shooting.

It's not a big enough deal to make this NOT my favorite game of all time though.

Calling what killed your first horse a "train accident" only for you to make it past the train and kill it on a rock, it just feels like the scene of an old comedy film. Perfecto.

The next red dead game should be set in 1861 during the start of the civil war where some cowboy escapes the bloody East to the west.

I do agree with all but your opinion on the second half of the game. I did really enjoy the gang unraveling & then John making a life for himself. The pacing isn't the greatest in some sections, but I felt that all across the game. As much as I disliked Guarma, I was really burnt out on the open world and constant long horse-rides through it, when I got there. That (relatively) short period, where all your freedom is taken away, made me really miss that stuff again, and I think that it was designed with this in mind.

For me it was perfectly 6/10 game. It had an amazing story, but was dragged down by its insistence on boring shooting galleries and bloated open world

If you disagree play more games, the gameplay could have been great for a game with such graphical grandeur.

I disagree with your point on the 2nd half, to me, guarma was a sort of preview to how fucked up and downhill the fate of the gang was going to be. We really started to see Dutch lose himself. I understand your point on abruptly introducing new characters so close to the end of the game but that whole part with the natives was really just to show what Dutch was becoming. If it weren't for that part how would we see the cold monster, Micah was turning Dutch into. It lead to important scenes like Dutch leaving Arthur to die, or seeing him lead eagle flies to his death just so he could rob the mining company. Also, that house building mission, mastapiece.

The second half of the game was good idk what ur talking about also it’s a 10/10 game for me

the story definitely gets better in the second half, but the gameplay and missions itself get boring, its all the same, go there, shoot some guys, steal some money. Gta V did it better, every heist added something new, bike chase with tear gas, a submarine and scuba diving, a fucking mini machine gun etc

Arthur being forced to mow down enemies for the last few weeks of his life, is the exact reason he begins to resent Dutch, in a way it worked perfectly upon you. Other than the hating all the shitty mechanics of course.

I played this game recently in 2023 and i gotta say that i felt the game had three thirds to it

the start, the middle eh part where everything is a plan and from Guarma forwards

the start felt really real even without backstory, you felt thrusted right into a started story that you can very well feel

the second part starts good with the robbing, planning, developing but it goes on for long if you ask me, all dialogue turns into "This score and then we leave" which is boring but it works, builds up tension and the idea that the next score won't go well, only to repeat

this loop is broken by Guarma and forwards, where everything you worked for just shatters and everything you knew is now a lie, turning every character into a scared animal, some run, some fight, some hide

while the second third isn't my favorite, it works out well with Guarma and forwards, you build up these characters with hopes and dreams, only for them to work to death and then the anger of nothing coming together like it was supposed to

4 years later and I’m playing this game for the first time. I’m having a ton of fun but I know I’d have more fun if I could just play video games the way dunkey does.

Loved the story. Gameplay was too restrictive in missions. Prefer Red Dead 1 more, but this is a very worthy sequel.

I feel like you should have put the game down for a month at the half way point. It sounds like to me you were just trying to finish the game instead of enjoying. I say this cause I do it too lol

Revisting this review to say that after 4 years, Rdr2 is a masterpiece.
In recent years, very few games come close to the quality of this game. And no other story comes close, in my opinion.
This dunkey review did not age well. But neither has dunkey...

The guy beat Dunkey with Aces and Eights, the Deadmans hand, and then Dunkey killed him.
