I mean it’s a bit stupid, since most Americans don’t know their ancestry. If you asked me as a French Canadian that same question I would say 400 years ago my ancestors landed on the shores of Quebec. They came from France, Poitou mostly but also other regions like Normandie.

We all know most people aren’t racist. All my American friends(of whatever race) weren’t, as long as I believe so. But i’m pretty sure most Asians have heard stuff like that a lot. No need to fight or fuss. Though at least it would have been better if the title was not ‘white’ and change to ‘racist’ instead

where are you really from is just a clumsy way of asking what their ethnicity is or where their ancestors came from if you are visually not native looking. Same thing happens in any country you go to and most of the time it isn't sad with any malinent. People just look for grievance and use it to gaslight and cajole people into their predetermined woke positions on the "issue".

Japanese people don't eat sushi every day. I only eat it two or three times a month at most. Some Japanese people don't like sushi and don't eat it. Sushi is not a Japanese home-cooked dish. It is also a mistake for everyone to make sushi in Japanese households. Not all Japanese people practice karate. Not all Japanese people wear kimono. Only a minority of Japanese people know how to wear a kimono. Stereotypes of Japanese people are particularly severe overseas. The stereotypes about Muslims and Japanese people are terrible.

Fun fact, in a lot of asian countries, they cannot tell white people apart either, even people with different color hair. In Korea many people could not tell me apart from my brother, who is taller AND with different hair. Really, looks little like me. Made zero difference.
In any country, if you are a minority in that country, people say this kind of stuff to you. Because they are ignorant, but that is not evil, just a fact because they have no experience with you.

I personally don't understand why it's so offensive to ask an Asian person, "Where are you from?" or "Where is your family from?". It's generally meant as simple curiosity. The reason we don't ask white people this is because most white people in America don't have an emotional connection to their ancestral homelands that Asians do. From what I've personally seen most Asian people I've met are the children or grandchildren of immigrants or they're immigrants themselves and they are much more attune to their heritage.
