The moment of impact: Terrifying CCTV of Spain train crash near Santiago de Compostela

Hmmm, certainly looks like there's some obstruction on the track that caused the derailment.

How did it even derail? I didnt see anything on the curve

A track-side CCTV camera video indicates that the front generator car was the first to leave the rails, followed by the leading passenger coaches, the front power car, the rear generator car and finally the rear power car. Three of the carriages were torn apart in the accident and another caught fire due to gaseous leaking diesel fuel. The rear generator car also caught fire.

The train operator was nowhere to be seen.

I really want to clear out it was the operative's fault but not entirely. Other comments dig deeper into what might have happened.

But I do feel bad for the man, he ended up totally messed up. I know he may have been negligent, but he's not an assassin. And you can't know if he was always not paying tor if he was just unlucky to be distracted that day.

I went in Santiago de Compostela in september, a few months after the accident. A nurse working in the CHUS, the central hospital of that city, told that it was horrible how many bodies were unrecognizable. They couldn't find out if corpses were male or female. Some corpses were fused with the metal of the train. And the man who drove the train was an idiot, still alive. He loved speed and used to post on social media videos of himself driving the train at high speed. A criminal who played with the life of that people and somehow survived.

I was there that day, not in the train but very close to the accident. That was a terrible accident, a fatal mix of human (the driver got distracted because he received an incoming call from the crew) and technical deficiences now solved, but i have to say that trains in spain are totally reliable and a very good way to move so dont hesitate to use them if you visit spain.

I was just in Spain & took the High Speed Ave a total of 4x. That thing would hit 190mph...the terrible thought of derailment always crossed my mind!

Not only do I feel horrible for the victims but i also hate that the rescuers and survivors had to see and go thru what they did. When they say mangled mess, that is exactly what the aftermath is like and no one should ever have to see what can happen to a body after a crash like this. It is horrific. I truly hope the victims r at peace.

I was in Tenerife in the Canary Islands (Spain) when the crash happened, I was 12 and it came on tv as a breaking news at in the restaurant we where in.

I remember watching this in the news when I was 6 in 2013.. I was scared of trains now I'm 13 and this is some massive nostalgia moment to my childhood rip to everyone who died in this crash
