I lost over $80k when everything started to tank. Not because I was in an exchange that went belly up. I was just stupid to hold and because that's what everyone said. I'm still responsible. It just taught me to be a better investor now that I understand more of what could go wrong. It took me over two years of being in the market, I'm really grateful I found one source to recover my money, at least $10k profits weekly. Thanks Charlotte Miller.

I think for a lot of people, not having kids or a home is the only way to make retirement possible. I'm in the camp where I could have either-or but not both.

I am 50 and right on the average net worth not including the house. If I should include the house in net worth then I am above average. Looks like I am tracking well even though my fire number is 3 times as much.

It’s never straight forward. It’s more about behavior than numbers. I just turned 40 and don’t have anywhere near 3x my salary in my 401k. However, it’s well over 3x the average salary. That formula doesn’t account for income growth. As long as you’re putting 10+% aside and live below your means you’ll be fine!😊

When you say "net worth" are you accounting for mortgage debt in the calculation? I feel like it'd be pretty wild for a 30 yr old to have a positive net worth if they also have a mortgage...

26 years old, net worth of ~175k. Definitely fortunate with turning 6 years of college into nearly 6 figures just 2 years into the workforce, and I’m extremely frugal. Net worth would be over 200k if not for wanting the nicer cars earlier in life but current car was bought in cash and only debt is 4500 in student loans at low interest (paying minimums because the rate is much lower than even my high yield savings). I feel fortunate to be where I am but also feel like I have miles upon miles to go so not letting up any time soon.

The issue with these formulas is that they're broken when working at a top tier tech firm. I'm in my mid thirties making ~500K. Let's say my salary doesn't change by 40, then the formula presented insinuates I should save $3M by retirement? Yeah...not going to happen. It's why I don't like any of these formulas. I am extremely frugal but these formulas don't work for higher income people.

Great info throughout; however, I disagree with the blanket statement of paying off your home. I know many people who have an interest rate on their home of less than 3%. With current fixed interest options they would be better off investing those extra dollars safely and continuing to make minimum payments on their mortgage. (Not including the fact that your mortgage interest is tax deductible, and many people’s effective interest rate is sub 2% right now.

(a) a lot of my net worth is in my house, so not at all liquid/available (i guess I could borrow against it, but...); if I count home equity, then well above median/just below average; if I don't count home equity, then well below median for my age (58)
