Alan rocks!
ОтветитьGreat Episode.
ОтветитьFantastic show! I love Allen's videos and this is very apropos today as my new Technician license showed up in the FCC data base today.
Ответитьmy electronics teacher in high school was a ham operator also. I use to hang around after school and he would fire up his ham gear in the backroom of his classroom and would listen while he was on the air. I never got into it myself but I have a couple of friends who are in the local ham club. The one guy builds spark gap tesla coils and linear rail guns as a hobby and has some videos posted on u-tube.
ОтветитьBils story about using his eyes as storage scope and then pointing at thin air screaming "There it is" cracked me up! :'D I love this show so much, and I always feel like learning something just from watching it, that's awesome!
ОтветитьVery nice show, brought back a lot of memories. I was there when that stuff was new state of the art . I started as a repair tech. in the Navy in 1969.
Ответитьworking on a VCO at the moment, Helpful to have you two yaking in the background.
ОтветитьAbsolutely amazing episode! Thanks for doing this.
ОтветитьGreat video W2AEW is one of my favorite electro-magicians
ОтветитьI think a lot of us got our start in electronics shop in high school. Thanks Bill for having Alan on think I fit right in with the Dinosaur Den crowd!
ОтветитьAs I recall, the big claim to fame for the Weston meters was their incredible shielding.
ОтветитьOne of the things the Weston galvanometer was used for was to set the track currents in railway signals. And I believe the mirrored scale was patented by Triplett much later(a repair?)
ОтветитьGreat show! Fun watching! RW KC2RDU
ОтветитьI have a Tek 465M :D
ОтветитьI still use a HP LaserJet 4plus lol!
ОтветитьIf W2AEW had a programmable frequency synthesizer, he could generate frequencies that his (restored) frequency counter could indicate as time. 00.0000 MHz for midnight, up to 23.5959 MHz for one second to midnight. That might be easier than wiring a clock circuit into the Nixie tubes.
ОтветитьMy two great hero here. Thanks always.

Came here for Allen, found a new channel. Thank you
Ответитьwe used the fluke diff meters at trott electronics to calibrate meter calibrators.
ОтветитьI recently repaired a Tek 465M. What a tank!
PS your website URL didn't work for me Dave - AC2GL
I remember repairing a Fluke 881... don't recall the problem but probably dirty switch on the KV decided. As to how "Volts" were transferred to local calibration lab, a "Standard Cell" was physically shipped to a lab with a more accurate standard (or bank of them) for intercomparison. This came back with a cert reporting reading. This intercomparison chain ran back to National Bureau of Standards (now NIST).
ОтветитьI've used a few 465's that were pretty beat but still worked. My favorite old school analog is still the 2445. I have often thought about buying one still, now that we are all digital. 90% of scopes with my previous employers were Tek. Throw in a few HP's (RIP) for good measure.
ОтветитьThe old Weston Ammeter has 3 scales on it. to use them one has to have 3 different shunts all rated at 50 millivolts one for each different range you want to use. The finish may be shellac. Lacquer was developed in 1919 and Weston was till using shellac at that time. to find out if it is shellac just put a drop of alcohol in an inconspicuous spot. If it does nothing then it is lacquer. If it gets gummy and gooey then it is shellac.
Ответитьold stuff
Ответитьcan anyone tell what kind of car the guy on left drives?
Ответитьvic 20's were reliable. I built an RF pager terminal test system that dialed 3 test pagers and waited for the pager to beep.
No beep after three tries tripped an alarm, ran for 10+ years.
Just cruising by looking for W2AEW video, when I saw this meter. I luckily have one saved from a university lab that was dumping older equipment. Mine was used as a motor speed monitor. It is 2 mA FSD and works well.
ОтветитьThought i recognised his voice. I'm already a subscriber. 73 MM0SDK
ОтветитьMy 1st computer was also C64, Atari ST, Amiga 500, 386 SX33, 486 DX66....
ОтветитьOmg, I didn't know the channel, I thought "well, the video title matches, I hope Allan doesn't get offended". xD
ОтветитьThe patent is for the parallax correction. It is a Greybach meter.
