Designing a pcb isnt childs play. The positioning of the ram around the gpu must be in a way that the gpu can access all ram chips at once at identical lantency. Power delivery is also a factor. So its not impossible its just more expensive. Of course people would also upgrade less. As we all know especially nvidia tends to limit vram on several of their cards so people buy again the next generation.

I think that the connection will be like a ddr5 (they need to make the ddr6x and ddr7 connector)speed and will be like the new horizontal rams

They should make it so you could use sodimm ram sticks like a laptop for your gpu.

Easy answer is scarcity. What's gonna keep you from spending $500 on upgrading your GPU if you can just spend $100 on VRAM. On top of that, the market for memory is larger than that of GPUs so you'll have a LOT more companies making it, meaning Nvidia doesn't get their shekels

What about RAM in the proccersors?

Yeah but the would decrease the GB per sec bandwidth speeds. Thats why companies don’t use socket but use either an m.2 or on chip connection

Imagine the new flat ram style being placed on top of your GPU card. Think that could work

Just do what they did for the new ddr5 modules on those motherboards boards that are just flat slabs, put it onto the backplate. Im 18 and into this stuff, hopefully one day I can actually do this.

The main reason I prefer the 7900 xtx over the 4080s is the vram, 16gb is not enough for a card as powerful as the 4080

i wish there was an another system of pc building where whole mother board was full of somthing similar to pcie slots when you in thoes slots like gpu or ram or pcb when you can put your cpu inside

I mean they used to have CPUs on a GPU board and I believe they used to have that a long time ago

They don't do this, because a large part of the sales comes from people needing the VRAM, without the gaming performance, and this would cost them in high end GPU sales, which is where they make their profit.

As someone working with LLMs, I also think it's the dumbest thing.

VRAM expansion is nothing new.
Its all been done before on old PCI - yes non E GPU.
Back in a time where PCI was meta GPU and before the AGP standard for GPU came to be a thing.

There were several of these PCI GPU which had Ram expansion slots.
Typically these would be black or Brown and raised up on the PCB GPU board at the rear of the card.

The tricky thing was tho, in those times mid late 1990's, there were many Video card brands.
And getting a GPU with these empty upgrade slots may have been a thing,

However finding a store, since internet well yeah very basic, which actually had the VRAM for that particular card was next to impossible.
At least where i was raised.

The problem is the vram needs to be fast, so having the shortest distance to the GPU core and no connectors helps that.

Its hard to have that since it creatses issues with signal integrity.

Also gpus have certain memory buffer widths (192) and it requires multiples of chiips, with some having more or less chips.
