My first console was Atari 2600 used. If it wasn't for carts, I would have never played it. My first new console was nes with Rob the robot. ha. But I can still pull them out of the closet and turn them on and play them no issues.

If I may, to say that a material edition would not be an integral version to preserve, for the reason that some do not include the integral content is an invalid argument, since a version lefting content to download is not an integral material edition, by definition.

This is like saying that a material edition is not integral because some of them are digital editions.

You see the point ? If it is digital to download, then this is not a material edition.

So do not transfer the inconvenients of digital to material when a digital license is disguised as a material version.

I don't entirely agree that its not preservation. it is still in alot of cases, just not of what some people would consider the peak of the game.

there's is still a need to preserve pre patched and potentially broken versions of games as well, assuming the game doesn't require online functionality to play a prepatch version could potentially be better if theres an exploit or different balancing or something you prefer too.

it's not that it isn't preservation, it is but just of the game at that exact moment in time when that disc was printed. games can get better or worse with patches and again assuming you don't need Internet to play it at all. there's still something there.

They will use blockchain tech in the future, so you have to log on into the servers. These can't be hacked as the block chain will be verified first, this is the biggest threat to emulation. You will be paying for each hour of play. This is the industry gold standard coming down the track.

Based on everything I've seen and read about game preservation, the conclusion seems to be that there is no one solution: preservation has to be an ongoing effort. Even emulation will need to be updated as the emulators themselves may not be compatible with future operating systems.

This is one of the few instances of media that I think really warrants government intervention/correction. The success of a nation is reflected in its art, but games are the only art medium that has been allowed to be neglected. The laws existing for games (enabling companies while hurting preservation) have done more to destroy them than anything else. Until this changes for the better (or at least until companies change their minds), there is no moral question nor obligation- it's all personal ethics. I'm committed to changing my tune once all video game companies are sufficiently responsible for archiving games. Some have said Disco Elysium should be pirated because its original creators are no longer paid for their work, and if that's your take on it than I've got nothing against you, but personally I'm satisfied with the fact that the game can still be played, so I'm willing to pay instead of pirate. Games such as Minecraft: Story Mode- which I purchased but didn't keep installed when I switched computers- cannot be bought anymore (I'm not even sure if physical copies have the full game, or if it requires a download that wouldn't work), so I'm willing to resort to very legal means to have it in my library.

Thank you for someone making a counterpoint video to this army of 30-40 something year old guys crying about no one buying physical media anymore! I have switched to 100% digital games since around 2017, probably the last time I can remember actually buying a physical game. My only regret is not switching to fully digital sooner. I have over 70 Nintendo Switch games, never inserted a game cart once. Both of my Switches are still virgins 😆, also over 200 Steam games. Obviously those are all digital too.

It's just so remarkable to me how PC gamers are seemingly the most satisfied out of all consumers with their platform, and yet they're the platform that has been 100% digital only for about 10 years or more now. Nobody even builds PCs with disc drives, because no one on PC uses them! All the complaints about constantly demanding physical games comes from the same place: 35+ year old guys with consoles. Literally no one else cares. The entire rest of the market has switched to digital only and is happier this way.

With over 200 games on my Steam account, I can play games in 4k 120fps on my PC, or just play them portably with my Steam Deck. I can leave the house with over 70 Nintendo Switch games at the same time thanks to an SD card. Seriously, this shit rules. I remember how much I used to hate having to switch the discs every time and fuddle through my CD book to switch the discs. I'm constantly playing different games and being able to instantaneously switch games is an enormous convenience.

Honestly and truly, at this point I am not convinced these people kicking and screaming over physical games even play games that much or are that into the hobby. I think their hobby is collecting discs and letting them collect dust on their shelf or something. Personally I have no interest in selling any of my games, I want to be able to play any of them whenever I want to, even if it's 10 years from now. With Steam you can always do that, and Nintendo seems to be clearly indicating that the new platform will likely carry over games from the Switch era through the Nintendo account. People who prefer digtial only are more likely than not not only buying more games, they're spending more time playing them too. Like I'm not even going to lie seeing some middle aged guy with a massive shelf full of games just looks pathetic as hell man. You would have to install all those games that are modern on the console to play them anyways, what's the point of taking up all this space? I completely don't understand the point of physical games anymore. It's just plain archaic and I'm glad Gamestop is dying and that Walmart and Best Buy have given up on them. Digital is the future and it rocks baby!

In some instances emulation is an option (as with MAME, you'll need a rather loose attitude towards the legal issues).
Since you mention Dreamcast Soul Calibur (still the best) it can be emulated on PC well, like a dream.

Another big issue with physical games being just download codes is the waste produced by them. Once that code is used, the box is completely useless unless somebody really wants to display it.

The only real way to actually preserve any media these days is putting everything online in digital format and emulating the game or movie on your computer and spreading the files around to other sites (doing it through consoles is NOT preservation). While yes it might be "preservable" on physical in some form, if you lose that copy, you now have lost access to the game forever. Either its preserving the game through a PC version of the game that is DRM free (like GOG if the company that hosts the games on the platform go out of business, you can still play all your games forever on that platform as long as you have your account). But basically the only true way to completely preserve the games is spreading the game files all over the cloud and internet now.

Just think about why manufacturers want to push us towards digital. They are not our friends, they just want our money, as much as possible, with the least effort. If there are no more physical games, we will be completely at the mercy of their prices. I don't see any advantage. Mario 3d All Stars is another example, no longer available.

physical is stil preservation to a degree. it isn't the only form of preservation, but it still helps preserve it, especially if you want to play the game on the original hardware. and for consoles like the ds, emulating it is an abhorrent pain and doesn't feel right due to how the console is designed.

digital and physical preservation is good. not to mention, you have no control of the game then. I want to actually own what I buy, not simply use it off a website.
for people with super limited money, emulation and pirating is a good thing, but I prefer to play the games ontheir initial consoles as well as actually own what I buy, even if it is more expensive and effort to upkeep that stuff.

Hitman WoA player here. Just wanted to chime in and say that yes, I get where IO was coming from because it made content delivery much easier for them. However making some substantial (and some paid content) being tied to being online is so damn stupid for a single player.

They literally took all this time making the Freelancer mode DESIGNED with endless replayability in mind only for it to die in the near future when they inevitably shut down it's servers which still, unlocks are tied to being connected. It's such a glaring oversight that's shocking all too common. Even something like Street Fighter 6 while incredible, didn't learn from 5 with a more standardized delivery for DLC. Now you not only need a patch but you need to sign in and verify your licenses for the DLC content before you can unplug which seriously defeats the point.

Why wouldn't you want more hard coded implementation of post launch content in your game? Everything is designed to be fleeting and short term now. Pretty shitty especially because you see invisible instances of amended pressings of games that do include the lastest version without ever knowing. I know Nintendo does this with their 1st party Switch releases but most will only do it if there is a substantial addition to the game that enforces a rerelease like Ghost of Tsushima and Death Stranding.

Sorry for the long post but this was an interesting perspective and video because while I am not a collector, I do like physical media like you. I know how expensive and frustrating it can be to navigate this stuff because neither digital or physical in their current forms aren't cutting it.

Going to keep dumping my games regardless of the law.
Imagine how much of a shit show it would be for the company if they pressed someone for just dumping their own games. I'd certainly make it a shit show for all parties involved and an eyebrow turner for bigger campaign donors.

Also if you want a laugh, the recent Hitman series of games currently have availability issues on PC. It's a real wonder why people get angry at me calling games with aggressive DRM like that dogshit.

I FELT that energy when he talked about grading companies. Those people are not "preservationists", they are literally investors holding onto something valuable and waiting for it to accumulate value, and then someone to throw ridiculous amounts of money for it. That is NOT a premium! Premium is actually playing the media on official hardware.
