This video is about the Maltese language and how it descended from an Arabic dialect with a large importing of foreign vocabulary.

Is "dinja" pronounced as a raised front vowel, separate from Arabic "dunya", only because it was probably a front rounded vowel at some point, possibly "dünya?"

Neglecting to mention Libyan Arabic as a maghrebi dialect but also the dialect with the most italian influence as Libya was an italian colony is so confusing

It’s essentially a fusion of Arabic and Italian with Arabic making up the vast bulk of that fusion!

Vocabulary does NOT make a language a hybrid!!! The basic vocabulary and grammar is based on Arabic so it is at its core a Semetic language.

I hope Malta (and numerous other unique places) can preserve its unique identity and language against immigration (seems to be very tax friendly) from both continents. Small national as well as regional languages often have a hard time surviving in a more and more globalized world. We need to appreciate the regional quirks everywhere and don't turn everything into a copy of American and West European large cities.

You said that "two years of French at Malta". Actually it was a good deal than that, because while the official language of the island was Italian, the majority of the Kinghts of St. Johns were French noblemen.

I'm from Sicily (Catania). Maltese sounds pretty unique and indeed arabic. You see tons of italian-english words but still, it's not possible to crack the code when they speak. Knowing sicilian doesnt help at all, as sicilian is a volgar latin language. Malta has kept a great deal of arabic while sicily didn't, for the fact that sicily has been colonized by normans settlers (and their allies). Plus, the sicilian cultural bond is distinctively southern-italian and the (quite short) arabic invasion didn't cut this link. The understanding between italian and maltese is however good, as maltese are educated to master ITA-ENG. An italian will find no problem to get around in Malta, and a Maltese will find italian not difficult at all.
