When the thermostat is calling for heat, the inducer motor should go on first, then the ignitor should start to glow, so that when the gas valve opens up and then gas flows out, it will fire up the burners so that you can see flames. If the ignitor doesn’t glow, you may need to replace the ignitor. If you see flames, but then they turn off, then the most likely problem is that you need to clean the flame sensor, which basically involves scraping off the soot build up from the flam sensor rod. The build up is preventing the flame sensor from detecting the flame. I just use a green abrasive dishwashing scrub pad. If the flame sensor can’t sense a flame, it will turn the gas valve off (and the furnace off) so that you are not releasing gas that is not being burned away.

To see what might be the issue with your furnace, first switch off the power to your furnace and then take off the panel cover to see what’s going on inside. For a Goodman furnace, you need to remove the cover from the top panel, and remove 2 screws at the bottom to pull the cover off.
To take out the ignitor, just unscrew the screw holding it in place and then unplug the wires. If your igniter looks totally fine, then there could be something wrong with the wiring leading up to the ignitor. A new one from Amazon costs around $30. Flame sensor is always going to be in the shape of a rod, but the ignitor can come in various shapes. It’s really important to not get the ignitor and flame sensor mixed up because you don’t want to be scrubbing the ignitor that might have been perfectly fine and end up breaking it. Flame sensors are quite inexpensive and many cost less than $10.
