What is a Sovereignty? It is the supreme power or authority. the authority of a state to govern itself or another state.
What is a Sovereign Rights? Sovereign rights are not Territorial rights deriving from sovereignty but rights of specific functional purpose. Sovereign rights in Article 56 of UNCLOS suggests rights are exclusive, not preferential over other states. EEZ or Exclusive economic zone is not sovereign territory, anybody can basically do anything there but for taking out the resources.

In this case, Ivan Watson says ‘half a dozen GOVERNMENTS’ not nations/ countries claim all or some of the South China Sea islands. That’s because Taiwan also claims these islands and the CNN propaganda machine doesn’t want to verbally include Taiwan as part of mainland China. In which case only 5 nations are making claims to these islands in the SC Sea. This use of words to drum up support for or to tear down a country/ government/ person, is used all the time in print, TV and social media. I used to accept ALL news reports that was reported by CNN, the BBC, the Washington Post, NY Times, etc unquestioningly. I stopped doing so in 2014-15 after CNN and the BBC refused to call the sovereign nation of Myanmar by its official name. Instead, referring to Myanmar as ‘Burma’. It name colonial Britain coined for Myanmar. CNN and many of the other Western media outlets are doing the same thing to China in the last few years. Japan was the target of the West back in the 70s and 80s as it prospered and grew. The 5 Eyes (Anglophile) nations, particularly the USA, UK and Australia are obsessed with China’s rise and new found status as an economic, military, engineering, scientific and cultural powerhouse. I’m not fond of the CCP and don’t support Communism.
