By definition this should be a gateway. Not a router. No routing is needed between these networks only NAT.

Why are you configuring 4 ports instead of 3 ports for the 3 host or computer device or network? Please i need an answer or please is the router part?

I think it is important to point out that vlans allow you to assign interfaces virtually to different subnets within the same switch. I find it a bit confusing to describe them as doing the same thing. Vlans have one job, essentially to give you separation using software in which was previously only achieved using hardware routers for physical separation. Multiple subnets are utilized in either case and is an extensive topic of its own.

Can you recommend a second hand switch I can pickup dirt cheap maybe an old Linksys or something to have a play with VLANs?

what about the laptop that connect on wireless. do we have to use router for big company.

I'm still confused as to why we don't just use subnets instead of VLANs. In this example for VLANS, there are 3 departments that wish to haves separate connections. I would assume we just put those 3 departments on separate subnets. What is the advantage of configuring the separation with VLANS as opposed to just subnetting. Forgive me for being stupid.

I use this for studying for my IT course and I always do well. Powercert is great at explaining fundamental IT concepts.

Bit pedantic but you can’t use Vlan 1 on a switch as it is the vlan that contains all of the ports out of the box. It’s the one you can apply an IP address to so you can ping the switch.

Quick question, if a VLAN can do everything a subnet does, but without the need for extra routers, cables, firewalls ,etc... then what would be the benefit of using a subnet instead of a VLAN?

Thanks I have a question though…when you say it is a logical connection in my head that means it’s using one physical wire? But it seems with Vlan you are still plugging different physical wires into different ports? I’m a bit confused…?

then you could also set up three separate switches instead of doing everything on one switch with VLAN

you need to provide us with information and a video on how to configure the switch to 3 different lands we listened to your recommendations and bought the switch but it needs configuration

the first half of the video was a waste because you're just going over the basics. wasn't looking for a video on basic networking, but was looking for a video on vlans. further your explanation on vlans is really bad.

how can you have one administrative pc (or alternately a shared server) that can talk to all the vlans?

Me: "accidentally" unplugs two cables from the VLAN switch then puts them back into the wrong ports
