Why is nobody talking about the fact that the Nikon doesn't do dual redundant recording in video mode? For me this is the biggest deal breaker for professional work. If i'm gonna spend £4000 on a camera with dual card slots to shoot for clients, it really ought to record to both cards like the Canon and Sony can.

I think you need to learn how to work with focus control in Z8 to get better result

Z9 (not in this video) is the best camera. You won't have to us any cage, any external battery, any dangling wires, with Nikon Z9, plus no overheating with a rugged body and good IBIS. Everything in one "box".
The only thing that Nikon must implement in its cameras (on photography side) is built-in Pixel Shift feature, just like Sony A1...!!!

I've been flip flopping between Z8 and R5 C for weeks now. In one review it'll say Canon's AF in videos is far more reliable. Another will say Nikon's is. 🙆 ahhhh

UNRELATED comment here...I own the Z8 and love it's video shooting and hybrid capabilities. BUT my business is becoming increasingly video centric and I've been considering a dedicated cinema camera, rather than hybrid. Can anyone explain what makes cine camera better than my Z8 (outside of built in nd filters)? Do less megapixels help dynamic range? Looking at the sony fx3 and crop censor brother the fx30. Someone help!

Canon wins handling? I have hated canon layout for ages and the new R stuff carries over the poor layout and frustraing wheels. Also as someone that has shot video for years, I laugh at the love of rear displays that flip on rotate and bend a million ways... if you need to see yourself get an external display. I switched to DSLR video for feild work in 2009, and never have used the flip out screens for selfie mode.

The R5C is the only camera here with a dedicated cinema operating system. Which gives more video features.

I thought the Nikon could record 8K RAW INTERNALLY and of course Pro Res?

I have the Canon R5 and I edit 8K 30fps on my iPad M2 and runs so smooth, files are over 80Gb.

watched this on 8K screen in 8K and honestly the difference is clearly there if you sit close and look for it but if you lay back on the couch and just enjoy the video 4K is just as good. i think 8K screens are worth it because oftentimes pictures on a web page can be small and having that extra resolution helps when you're up close, but if you're going to watch a video you will be on the couch and at that point it doesn't matter. and if you watch a video in a window rather than full screen then it doesn't matter even if you're close to the screen. basically i wouldn't stress too much about 8K video.

You have to shoot 8K to produce a true 4K.

You’re such a baby…waaaaaah …. I have to have a real computer in order to edit 8k! Duh! Yes I’ve had clients ask for 8K and I have no problem with my M1 Ultra and 128 GB of RAM. And anybody who doesn’t use Davinci Resolve… Doesn’t deserve to be editing 8K. Resolve blows all the other editing systems out of the water!
6K on the Komodo X is a great alternative you never talk about. It is a $10,000 camera. But with an image that looks very film like.

Who TF is shooting 8k? are you okay? Do we need to call someone? Do you have more money than you know what to do with? Do you have a server farm to store the footage?

a miss category to grade them on is what lens they have access to.

Regarding the battery life test, you mentioned that you couldn't take the battery grip off, so Sony lasted long because of the grip?

This is a fantastic video, and while I'm a Nikon fan, the Z8's faults hit pretty hard. It will be interesting to see what the A7CII offers for half the cost or less! This video with a $2500 body price cap would be that much more interesting. ;)

Interesting that shooting handheld is not a category? Like stated, Canon don't have IBIS and the Nikon is above and beyond Sony's IBIS. The cost of the Nikon is also lower and the lenses for Nikon is well cheaper than Canon so it's a better starting point for someone looking to jump ship och start out.

As a Nikon shooter, I would love to know what Sony is doing to get such good battery life and understand why Canon and Nikon can’t do the same. Battery life is one of the two main reasons I prefer my Z9 over my Z8. More customisable buttons is other reason. Actually, never getting an overheat warning and just the feel of the Z9 are two more reasons. Yes, I know the Z9 is heavier, but I’m surprised to hear myself saying how good it feels in the hand.

Using a Macbook was the first problem. That whole thing can be replicated and better for a quarter of that price from any other manufacturer...and you won't have to deal with Apple nonsense.

Er, why isn't this vs the R5... the R5C is not really a hybrid camera, it has a fan for gods sake?!

What I want to know is are the new nikon sensors from Z8/9 susceptible to colour cast and heavy vignetting when using vintage style compact lenses like the voigtlander 15 4.5? I have no problem on my z5 but I do on my sigma fp, and apparently it's down to the more modern Sony sensors... or my dumb 3rd party adapter is further away from the sensor on the nikon...

Except for some B-roll, been shooting 8K since I got my Z9, 17 months ago. Added the Z8 more recently. I looked forward to 8K for the flexibility it offers in post. For all the reasons mentioned in other comments the Z System gets my vote ... not to mention my $! The internal 10-bit SDR is so nice, it's what I mostly shoot.

Nice video, thanks. 8k is not useful to me, and I can only imagine is is useful when I want to lock off the camera, and re-frame later like when filming live, but unsafe & unpredictable events.

720p is all I need, maybe 1080.

I think I better comparison would be the standard R5 since the R5C is a cinema-hybrid camera. The auto focus system is different (and I actually like it better than what you find in other mirrorless canon cameras) but if you want sticky auto focus than the standard R5/R6 etc. will stack up against these cameras more similarly in my opinion. Great video!

I am on the M1 Ultra with 128 gigs of RAM and I always use Resolve… And I can play 8K like butter. I don’t care about file sizes I only care about picture quality.
Wish you would’ve included the Panasonic S2X… That would be an interesting comparison.

8k is a bit much for me. I'm ok with 6k RAW on an atomos.

Best battery life with Sony yet he shows it with external battery grip 😂 bafoon
