At this point the Japs shouldve had a major advantage in aircraft carrier warfare, so the results of this battle were disappointing... and then Midway was the final nail in their coffin
Actually out of all carrier battles, paradoxically the best handled one was Marianas turkey shoot in 1944 when US task forces were already miles ahead of their enemy. Ozawa there managed to launch 4 powerful strikes, full deckloads, while staying out of the enemy range. Unluckily for him, thr Hellcats mauled his air groups since they were so much better anyway. The US carrier attack late in the day was at the edge of range, and many ditched on the return... so Spruance was criticized for his loser mentality and had there not been US subs sinking two carriers, this battle would have been a draw basically.

Interesting how in 1942 the Japs held all the advantages yet failed to maul their opponent more savagely. Whenever Jap elite fliers came upon the US carriers they scored hits.

There are so many reasons for this but if Nagumo was sacked earlier, they may have had more success. In 3 out of 4 carrier battles of 1942 they had the numerical advantage in carriers.

As usual with Japanese naval operations, too complex, so much room for error. We definitely won’t see Japanese naval operations like this again …

The Japanese operations were always too complex for their inferior communication technology and lack of any radar system. Only a tiny portion of the IJN saw action at Midway, so the Americans were even superior in the air.

As a disabled Veteran, and a student of WWII History, I was surprised to stumble over this channel quite by accident. I am delighted to have a channel where I can watch the War in the Pacific play out week by week, with everything that went on, victory or defeat, instead of just concentrating on the big battles. Keep up the good work! While the subject, being the War in the Pacific, is not a happy subject, I am still eager to see all of it, not just what the events that show up everywhere else.

Not only was Japans doctrine of decisive battle stupid (you don't form the basis of long term war strategy on a singular concept that worked out once in the past) but their overly comprehensive plans are idiotic. They assume so many movements from the enemy and don't allow for fluid decision making in real time.

Japanese wins "Battle of Coral Sea

The USS Yorktown was sunk by Japanese torpedo bombers and caused the number of Americans present at the battle of Midway to be reduced by a third.

The superiority of the Japanese advanced fighter plane technology gave the Japanese forces an overwhelming advantage. US naval forces were unable to locate and engage the Japanese carriers. This gave the Japanese sufficient time to organize their forces and strike at the American fleet, sinking the USS Enterprise and severely damaging the carrier Hornet. Admiral Spruance is killed in the aerial bombardment on his flagship.

Every time a single ship is sunk in WW2, hundreds of sailors die within minutes if not seconds. For example the naval battle of Guadalcanal caused the US Navy to lose 1000 men KIA in a single night while the US Marines division on Guadalcanal took a month to rack up such losses

Based on the 1976 movie, Midway, the Battle of the Coral Sea, was a dry run for the Battle of Midway. The US lost the carrier Lexington and its Yorktown, heavily damaged. The Japanese lost 2 light carriers and a cruiser.

One of the forgotten moments in history was that Japan should have taken Midway after Pearl Harbor. Their ships sailed past it to get to Wake Island, another US outpost. This accidental blunder would cost them the war. The deciphering of Japanese codes was actually done before Pearl Harbor. But to keep that secret safe only limited information was sent out and Pearl Harbor was woefully unprepared. (There is clear evidence that FDR knew the attack was coming but did not pass the information on.) The Coral Sea was the first battle between carrier groups only.

The first battle were Aircraft Carriers squared off and although the Americans lost not only the battle but a very important Carrier they started a trend that would continue throughout the war were they recued as many downed aircrews as possible. The Japanese on the other hand left many of their downed crews to die and the attrition would hamper them to the point that within a year they didn't have enough pilots to successfully use the Carriers they had left. Lesson learned...don't waste your men! A simple lesson Caesar had practiced almost 2000 years earlier and had allowed him to defeat superior numbers throughout his career.

A steep learning curve for both IJN and USN Task forces. Illustrated the importance of accurate reconnaissance, capability in aircraft and pilots, logistical depth and a bit of luck needed in a carrier battle. The intelligence gathered through the cracking of the Ro code however was probably the single biggest boon to the allies during this period in the Pacific theatre when the Japanese were at their apex.

My uncle was Nick Borich gunners mate USS Dewey. He was awarded his Silver Star on the basis of after being shot in the head he remained at his gun and continued to shoot IJN aircraft in defense of Lexington.

He was the kindest gentlest man you would have the pleasure of meeting.

Yamamoto bore the responsibility for all this mess, there had been no proper planing or exploiting of the the advantageous Japanese points during the early stages of the conflict. He led his army in a gamble rebuking any one tried to to advise him waving with quitting if his suggestions not approved without discussion! Ultimately he doomed his nation however, hi would have been enjoying an exaggerated respect and preserving un unquestionable commission .instead of being interrogated if not penalized for his blunders
