A book I re-read every autumn (or at least try to) is an old one (1970s) titled The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane, by Laird Koenig. I start reading it on October 31.

You don't actually have to read Dostoyevsky as well as any other russian writer because their works have no influence with russians. Those works considered being great aren't product of real nation mind.
If you would ask me about a book to replace russian ones - I may try to suggest reading some of ukrainian origin.
"The UnSimple" by Taras Prokhasko could be cozy for reading, with powerful autumn vibe and a bit of fantasy.
Or "The Orphanage" by Serhiy Zhadan which is an exciting thriller.

There’s this semi-new book called House of Hollow. It also gave me autumn vibes, even though idk if that was their intention. Even still I think it’s a good book. It’s this mystery/fantasy book about three sisters who disappeared and returned a month later with completely no memory and their appearance had changed. Their blue eyes turned black, they’re dark hair turned white and seem to have this disturbingly intoxicating effect on people that’s been unexplainable. Eventually the oldest sister, Grey disappears and the other two sisters think it’s related to their original disappearance and go to find her. And their are so many plot twists lmao!

Your experience with Crime and Punishment totally resonated with me and my experience reading The Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit was a difficult read for me, but it was interesting enough that I got through it. The Fellowship of the Ring, however, is a whole other kettle of fish!! I’ve managed to stumble my way through the first book, but I couldn’t tell you what happened. For me, even as a native English speaker, the writing style is so difficult to parse that I lose context constantly. It’s become such a struggle that I don’t want to continue it.

Crap, I just got my books for this fall, now I have at least 10 more books I need to get (also got a few recommendations on goodreads).
This year I got (I haven't read any of them yet);
- Sheets (a comic), by Brenna Thummler
- The house in the cerulean sea, by TJ Klune ( I don't think it's an autumn book, but it's fantasy and found family, so I'm in)
- Mystery of Black Hollow Lane, by Julia Nobel
- Winterhouse (I got it already for winter), by Ben Guterson
- Practical Magic, by Alice Hoffman (I want to start reading the whole book series, maybe also for next year)
- Scritch Scratch, by Lindsay Currie
- Ravenfall, by Kalyn Josephson.
I want to have a few fantasy books focused for older kids as well, some of those are my absolute favorites because they can be so creative, adventurous and whimsical.

From the years before, I really love;
- The Witch Boy comic series, by Molly Knox Ostertag,
- Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett,
- Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas,
- Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire,
- and the Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.
They're all books I can just grab of the shelf anytime to get into autumn mood (and I've read all the way in a day or two).

A few other books I've got on my list for this fall are;
- Faeries of the Faultlines, by Iris Compiet. I've just seen this book and I need this in my life.
- The Starless Sea, by Erin Morgenstern
- A Study in Drowning, by Ava Reid (but you already have that on your list)
- The Library of Shadows, by Rachel Moore
- The September House, by Carissa Orlando
- Home Before Dark, by Riley Sager
Most of these are books about old houses and spooky stuff happening.

Oh man, i read The House Witch and both the sequels and i hated It SO MUCH. Its been so long since ive actively hated a book series, i dont know what it was exactly. The main character was insufferable and i just felt like it didnt really deliver on the cosy fantasy promise. It was just another main character with amazing powers saving the day.
