This is prob a hot take but Japanese names are the best names in the world.

I'm white, but I almost always use Japanese or Korean names for all of my RPG characters. Why? Because they honestly have very cool names.

Mei itself also can be a common word used in female Chinese names. Mei 梅 means plum and given that there is a huge Chinese Indonesia population that could actually just be an abbreviation of her actual name.

The funny thing is that afaik, this is not a white thing, not even a western thing. This is very specifically an american thing, regardless of race.
In Europe cultural appropriation is... not really a thing anyone ever considered, before it arrived with american media, and it is still a very weird concept. Even if people do it badly. In my home country people like to buy "native costumes" and wear them and think they look native now, and if those are very tacky or people behave badly in it and they look like a caricature, we shrug and think about them that they are stupid tourists.
