Because if the clone is 99.5% the same performance and feel as the genuine watch and 10 times less in cost, what is the point spending 10 times more just for that negligible 0.005% difference? A watch is not a technological marvel, nor does it normally comprise of rare materials, nor does it need huge engineering effort to make! you never see a 'fake' Rolls Royce or Ferrari on the streets do you? If the workmanship, rarity, difficulty in design and manufacturing effort is not able to justify the price then it's not worth the price! You're just paying for the name. And as long as 'Name' is your only point of difference and selling point you're going to see the clones being made.

It seems like the easiest way to check is by pulling the crown out, winding it, and listening to its clicks. With that said, that's insane and scary how close these fakes are. I would never be able to tell. Even seeing them side by side, the differences are so minimal. With that said a second time, I would never buy a Rolex. I hate their business practices. My grail watch used to be a yachamster 40, but no AD could get me the one I wanted. They would all claim that they had none and that there was no waiting list I could get on. I ended up going with an Omega Ultra Deep. Two very different pieces but I couldn't be happier. I could care less now if Rolex goes out of business. I wouldn't be sad, one bit.
