I felt so bad for Ehren, vultures, roaches, scorpions, that's all one thing, but a Black Bear is literally an entirely different beast, it didn't even have to become violent to be dangerous, a little too playful or curious, and he really could have lost something important.

The handlers reaction says it all. It just shows that if the handlers reaction was that concerned then this bear was never truly safe.

The bear had its claws and had its teeth and that salmon was behind the belt and it wanted it.
