A few countries outside of Europe do participate, such as Australia and Israel. In truth a country does not need to be in Europe to participate, but they need to be part of the Broadcasting union that helps organize the event. Also Australia have been long time fans of the contest, and had been broadcasting it since the 80's, so sooner or later they would have to let them join.

Eurovision is not a "European countries only" contest. Australia was invited for the obvious reason that theiy're very western culturally.

Not only is Sam a great singer and the song is good, he also came second and the Eurovision 2023 will therefore be held in the UK (on behalf of Ukraine, who cannot host because of the war).... regarding Australia: they were actually only invited for the 60th jubilee in 2015 but take part since then =)

Its Eurovision not Europevision, It is about a broadcasting service you have to be connected to, Australia has came in as an honorary guest one year and everyone loved them so much that they go to stay. If they ever win though the contest will be held in a country in Europe because of the time-difference.

Australia in Eurovision is kinda a long story. They've been sitting up in the middle of the night watching Eurovision for many years. While Americans barely heard of it, Eurovision has a huge following in Australia.

When Eurovision was celebrating it's 60th anniversary, Australia was invited to have a performance like the competing songs, but wasn't competing. It was hugely popular, so Australia was invited the year after to compete, and they've now been doing it for years.

They've never won, and there's no consensus what will happen if they do. One thing is known - Eurovision will not go to Australia.
