Emerging from the steaming pile of late released budget titles for the PS2 comes.......DT RACER! No please, hold your applause.

This game totally got panned in the media for all of it's issues. IGN gave this game a 3.2. Wow, now that's shitty. So I normally avoid games like these like the plague, but DT Racer caught my attention by having some impressive graphics normally not seen on a PS2 like dynamic shadows, some killer reflections, and high res textures. I had to check it out so I picked this game up for 2 bucks. Right away I was impressed by the intro. It was 10 times better than Enthusia's and this was a budget title. To keep this description within readable length, I will just tell you that if you try this game, DO NOT turn off any of the driving assists other than the "drift assist". Turning either of the other 2 assists off renders the game UNPLAYABLE! Don't worry it's nothing pride shattering like ABS or TCS.

I have a love hate relationship with this game. I love the way it looks, the sense of speed, track designs, and even the fake car mock ups. The game features damage that affects your car's performance a little, and you have a limited amount of boost in each race. The controls are for the most part decent and physics are surprisingly good, perhaps a little too good in some areas which comes some problems. You must manage your speed much like a F1 racer. Going just a little too fast around a turn with the wheel cranked all the way will send you oversteering out of control. Rubbing or hitting a wall will cause you to ping pong from one wall to another until your speed is all gone. While crazy frustrating in a game, hitting a wall at over 100 mph will do this in real life. Slight bumps and slopes in the road cause your car to lose grip and balance especially under power. Downshifting and braking is weird. Your car automatically goes into neutral when you brake. If you've downshifted under braking, and the gear is still too low, the car will not come immediately out of neutral unless you tap the gas. I can see what they were trying to simulate here, but it works much better with a clutch pedal than the game trying to simulate one for you. All the cars hold their speed way way too well. Many times through those turns on the last track my foot was off the gas. I guess you can say that they over simulated inertia. Anyway all that stuff is workable. But the thing that makes me hate this game is the A.I. They are straight up assholes! No, not aggressive like TOCA or Forza. No, more like racing online with a bunch of 12 year olds on XBL. You see it in this video. They are twice as bad on the NORMAL difficulty!! That's right. I was playing on easy because on normal, the A.I. dicked me over and over again. They also dick each other, but that hardly makes up for it. Couple that with the unforgiving physics, you have a game that you love to hate.

So what am I saying? Is this a bad game or what? I'm actually not sure yet. I admire what they were trying to do, and what they actually pull off, but the asshole A.I. is almost game breaking. Also it seems that the game doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a simulation or arcade racer? That still hasn't stopped me from going back for more punishment for some reason though. This game is very challenging. I cannot recommend this game. Try at your own risk. Don't pay more than 2 bucks for it that's for sure. I was in fact using the Driving Force EX while recording this game and I highly recommend a wheel for this game vs. the controller. It does support force feedback, but it provides nothing but simple resistance.
