Herbivorous animals get their B12 from eating dirty plants that have bacteria in them, or they get it from their gut microbes. Carnivorous animals acquire B12 by consuming other animals; it's a cycle.

You mentioned not to buy fortified nutritional yeast, but the unfortified version doesn't contain B12. In fortified nutritional yeast, B12 is manually added because yeast doesn't produce vitamin B12
