If group b existed today it would be unimaginable, modern wrc cars are already insane but they still fly under the rules so imagine what kind of crazy innovations these crazy engineers can come up with. Modern drivers also are crazy today so ill bet a handful of them will be insane enough to actually drive in modern group b

It wasn't really too fast. In terms of the drivers, the chassis, the suspensions and the drivers, they didn't match the capabilities of the engines.
Today, the rally cars go much faster and the race is safer than the Group B days.

I'll watch racing again when a no-restrictions league happens. Like F1, what a total joke. Top racing series on Earth? Maybe if the cars were actually as fast as technologically possible, otherwise its just a farce.

Group "B" probably means Group BALLS . Those guys have balls of steel for handling such fast cars with air time and stuff such as large crowds occupying the track.

I am a bit conflicted about the whole idea of no barriers to spectators. On the one hand you want to protect lives, not end them. However, on the other hand I definitely believe that if you really didn't want to get hit, you would just not stand there. Every person in the world is smart enough to not get hit intentionally by a car.

Honestly For rally and especially group B I don't care how close they are to Stock Cars. I do however, care about NASCAR being close to stock cars, it would be sick to see cars that look like everyday sports cars all racing around a track.

danger is what makes stuff fun. health and safety police ruined everything. If you don't want to die as a spectator, don't go. If you don't want to die as a driver, don't race. You know the risks. Let people do what they want.

Audi had due to its longitudinal engine layout a lot of overhang over the frontwheels, audi was and still is understeering because of being nose heavy in front of the front axle

Why is safety even an issue? If you don't want to die, don't drive or stand in the way of a race car. McDonald's is hiring people who don't want to drive race cars, and television will entertain people who don't want to get run over.

From what I've read the engineers for the Audi had to install a push button shifter that made a lever manually press down on the clutch, since the driver had to flutter the throttle and brake almost constantly to keep some semblance of control and didn't have time to move his foot elsewhere.

Its funny that you can get roadcars that are faster than group b cars and modern wrc cars are faster too. As some posters have said its the spectators that haven't improved!

Nearing the 1000 horse power, that never really made it, but 600 is still something.

Soooooo just move spectators out of the middle of the road, and stop racing on shear cliff faces, seems like a pretty simple fix to me.........

The crazy thing is that the 037 remained a viable option for private teams for a couple years after lancia took the championship with it. Maybe not exactly competitive when put against the AWD teams, but definitely a competent vehicle with handled correctly.

There were plans by one of the manufacturers (Audi I think) to introduce a car with a 1000hp engine for rallying, which is quite honestly just insanity

insane. thanks for this recap. got interested in rally as a kid in the 90s and still love to watch and play rally games since then.
