As to the popularity of the smokey teas----recall that food was cooked over an open fire so perhaps everyone was used to having a smokey tinge to everything, including teas.

John Montegu was the 4th Earl of Sandwich. He was head of admiralty during the 1870s and decided eventually to protect the business with the Caribbean and give up on the 13 colonies. He invented the sandwich—his most notable accomplishment!

Really diabolical that they dressed up as Indians. I’m always amazed when I hear about how nice the Indians were to the settlers. It wouldn’t take too many incidences like this before you’d hate them.

I'm sure that the ancient Chinese who developed these teas did not have liquid smoke and I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't pour a liquid on top of the tea leaves that they're trying to dry out. Therefore I feel certain that the tea leaves were actually held and suspended over a smoldering, smoky fire to get smoked just like smoked meat. The particular flavor of smoke would have depended upon the type of plant material or tree that they were burning. Obviously we like hickory smoke very well in America even pecan smoke or oak smoke are used in making brisket.

Justine's face after smelling the Bohea made me smile while drinking some Earl Grey 🤣

My favorite black tea atm is Russian Caravan. I do not know if the black teas Justine and Ron tried were OVERLY smokey in aroma, the Russian Caravan has smokey aroma as well, but only enough to accent the tea. As you take the cup and while you take that sip, it feels as if you are at a campfire taking a break after a long journey and need a beverage that is both elegant and wakes you up to continue the long voyage.

Hey Justine, I’m so glad I found your channel and your doing a great job. I have written and led authentic tea events particularly as the British came to this country and what they brought with them and bringing their own tastes of tea to infuse with America. And particularly doing so in the first city of this country being Saint Augustine, Florida. I have worked with Oliver Pluff for year with tea events and Spice and Tea Exchange. So here’s a few tips and tie bits you may enjoy. First Bohea is pronounced “Boo-hee” I know most want to say “Bo-Hee-ah” which is incorrect and I hear “Bo-hee” but the accurate way to pronounce is “Boo-hee”. Also, this tea is absolutely magically delicious but you have to do the magical piece that makes this tea gold. I noticed you cringe with how strong it is or feeling it’s so smoky and it turns people off but that’s actually the magical piece you need. This tea has to be served with sugar and cream aka milk. Never cream as cream will curdle but simply milk. Once you add milk and sugar and I promise you will be in love with this tea. I have held yea events serving this tea as it should have been and people line up and buy it by the pound! Also Spice and Tea Exchange took Boo-hee (Bohea) tea and infused this tea with Floridian flavors with hints of orange and cinnamon and OMG I am seriously addicted and buy this tea in the historic district or online religiously. My husband said we spend about $300 a year on just my tea consumption from Spice and Tea Exchange alone and I only buy Bohea. Lol.
Also, Oliver Pluff makes the BEST Cocoa Tea, and I do mean the BEST! You open the can and the smell of chocolate is insane. Spice and Tea Exchange also do Cocoa Tea but it’s absolutely awful. So anyone who likes this tea from Spice and Tea your in for a treat to buy it from Oliver Pluff Tea. Anyway this tea was Martha Washington’s favorite tea and she had it every single morning. They said George Washington bought it in pounds for her and when it came in they knew who it was for at port due to how much in weight it was and how expensive it was. It’s simply cocoa nibs and when soaked in boiling water and again adding cream and sugar which is really a must for women drinking tea. Anyway when all combined it’s better then hot chocolate. And Oliver Pluff does an incredible Red Chai that only grows in South Africa soil and it’s absolutely beautiful. All my tea events I do Oliver Pluff Bohea, Spice and Tea Exchange Bohea (Florida or Southern infused), Cocoa tea, and Red Chai. Also I saw on another video you showed a sugar cone which I also use and explain in my tea events. The sugar bibs you used looked more industrial and not what would have been used in a delicate tea party event. The cone was essential for a tea event or party and the reason was this. A tea party was how news was spread by gossip and it was also how you showed your value and presence within your community. Think of it like driving a new car or a new outfit or anything that says “look at me”. What was comparable would be having kerosene lanterns lit or multiple candles lit in a home also said to your community look at how much money we have. So everyone wanted to be friends with the people of money or power and this was a way to display this to have power in a community and friends. When we see houses especially at Christmas with a candle or electric candle lit in each window it is a way to replicate lights being shown all throughout a home which was extravagant back then and being very over the top with money. The working class had dinner by 5pm before the sun went down so as to not use candles or kerosene as this was expensive. The wealthy waited to eat at 8pm to light the house up with candles or kerosene as a way to say we have money. We then see how an Afternoon Tea began to get by to 8pm for dinner. When someone got a tea invitation that was a must to go or was seen as a slight to the party giver and just would not be done. So a tea party was another way to show the women in her town and men their money. Men were invited as well but they had tea and a cigar in another room. The women while having a tea party the maids would help serve EXCEPT they never handled the Sugar. The sugar was under lock and key by the wife holding the only key. The wife would take the sugar out and would particularly buy a full sugar cone for a tea party and would place it on a plate and walk around to her guests to see the huge cone and ask “one lump or two?” She would then take her smaller nibs that were like small claws and scoop off the cone to the tea cup. The wife did the scoops and served it personally. If there was not a tea party families would buy sugar but broken up. So think of it like when you go to a chocolate store and you see a big bloc of chocolate and they ask how much? We will say “a small piece” or “4 ounces”. And the reason is because it’s expensive. Sugar came to the local store in a town in a cone and the shop keeper would break it up and weigh it to how much a family could afford to buy it. But for a tea party the entire cone was bought. Now you can see how special that would have been and there is no way the wife would allow the help any access to that cone at all. In fact tea was sold out the back door of a home having a tea party because people could re soak the tea leaves and get another tea cup from it. This was a way the help would make extra money without the owners knowing. So tea parties were a huge and a must event.
Anyway if you ever googled “Tea Time with Abigail” or Tea Time with Abigail and Rose” or Historical Tea Time with Abigail”. That’s me, I’m Abigail. :)
I’ve been doing tea events all over Florida even up on location up into Delaware too. I worked at the Colonial Quarter in Saint Augustine and that’s where this tea event began. Anyway great channel and your doing a great job but wanted to help you out a bit to enjoy Bohea tea and I think if you added cream and sugar you would love it. People who don’t like adding cream and sugar to tea would try this at my tea events and became instant fans. :)
I do feel like I’m an expert on an Afternoon Tea and because of that I’ll end my piece with reminding all who read that the accurate term is Afternoon tea and not High Tea (my biggest pet peeve) unless your having dinner at a dinner table aka “high table” as they referred to a dinner table and this would then be a “high tea” but this was a working class tea. It was at dinner at 5pm, no cream, no sugar, drank with a dinner of substance. But a tea served at a “low table” or called here in the States “coffee table” this low table tea served with cream and sugar and treats then absolutely has to be called Afternoon tea and never ever ever High Tea. :) Or can be called “Tea Time” which was for about 20 years that used this term as a time of day. So every day at 2pm was also called “Tea Time” if someone asked what time is it? And someone said “Tea Time” they knew this meant 2pm. This term is where I took it for my tea event names. :)

Americans started to gravitate more towards coffee after the Boston Tea Party. The British always said "spill the tea", while Americans say "spill the beans" 😆. A direct connection to the event in the harbor.
