Super talk, completely valid explanation of my experiences of education, but I still have one huge question. How do we get the conservative idiots who run the show to actually listen and allow changes to this archaic classist system of education?

I had a indian professor who only taught my mesmoring to pass the test. This doesnt translate into the real world where variables are always changing. Its imperitive to make sure students have a clear understanding of the theory and how it can impact the equation.

All this praise for Sal is from people who have a desire to learn, including me. However, once I became a teacher I realized that the real issue is that most kids have no desire to learn. They see no purpose in it. They don't want to fill in the gaps, Sal's fatal flaw here is that he doesn't have real classroom experience, and I mean like real real classroom experience. Most "experts" don't. That being said I think he is a great resource for those trying to learn.

Just one thing he got wrong imo, the future is still going to be a pyramid. It's not going to be automation at the bottom, it's going to be AI at the top.

Okay, I really like the idea behind this, and I've suggested it myself. But how do we keep those who need a lot more time to master a subject (or several subjects) able to complete their secondary education before they reach adulthood? How do we keep colleges from discriminating against the students who finish their math requirements at age twenty-one, versus those who got it taken care of by age seventeen? Are we as a society going to fund someone who spends seven years in high school? Are we going to provide childcare while they finish mastering their English requirements or their Biology requisites? Do these students get to continue with advanced courses if it took them three years to master the basic ones?
I know that our current system has similar, and in some cases worse, failings. I'm not suggesting that this isn't a better approach. I actually think it is. But in order to put it into effect, we're going to require a system overhaul and a radical adjustment in our expectations. Are we prepared to do that?

Great presentation about the idea of mastery learning. This was like 6 years ago. The fascinating thing is that another Ted talk for Sal Khan was released few days ago about using bots in Khan academy and i believe using AI to achieve mastery learning could shape future learning.

The school system is so broken and inauthentic. Few people within it challenge it and really make change. Too few even understand that education itself isn’t the existing, flawed process itself.

the historical perspective was really cool. it makes his cause more imperative. we have the resources NOW for everyone to fill in knowledge gaps and to encourage everyone to strive for mastery in areas people were historically discouraged out of. the equalizing force of the information revolution has opened doors for equitable access, and now is the time for everyone to realize a mastery framework

Whilst I think everyone benefits from mastery learning, I do think people have their cognitive limits, as well temperamental ones. I can't get motivated, but anything academic is easy.

I think for kids we should do everything we can go help them with mastery though.
