So this then must refute the RC doctrine of Papal succession; as it’s not about Peter himself.

It surely refutes the Protestant position also then, by saying it’s not about Peter’s statement of enlightened truth about who Jesus was and this being the rock of faith we stand on.

But it’s about the location and the significance of that !

Why call Peter the rock

Dr. Heiser is excellent! I just wish scholars who know better (like him) would begin correcting errant translations and transliterations, like “church.” The Greek word is ekklesia is NOT appropriately translated as “church.” Etymologists disagree about the etymology of the word church, but ekklesia is known and means “called out (ones), in other words, the faithful followers of Yeshua. Words are important and using the wrong ones that ignorant translators used dilutes the Word and even misleads people. These poor translations were sometimes just the translators doing their best with what they knew (which was often sorely lacking in knowledge of Hebrew) but also sometimes pushing a (false) theological agenda of the Roman “church.” Word studies like this are important and we need more of them and then, begin using the better, more meaningful translation!

The falling away already happened. The protestant reformation was the falling away.

In the original Greek, Peter’s confession “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God” is the Rock upon which Jesus says He will build His Church.

Dr. Heiser, I've seen your explanation on the greek interlinear for the gates of hades "Not withstand it" in a few different videos I've watched of you. My question is what interlinear are you using that has the breakdown with the arrow for the untranslated word placed there? Every interlinear I've used, has it broken down what I would say as the "traditional understanding" way of "not overcome it". I love the thought, the way you explain it, but I don't see it reflected in any of the interlinears I have accessed. Please help! lol

I love your work but you are mixing in a bit of greek plato here suggesting they are alive somewhere, against the very Hebrew concept of the dead being in the grave asleep till Resurrection, yet to come even now. David was still in his grave 50 days after Jesus rose, according to Peter, and is still there now, knowing nothing, along with all other dead people, in Gods remembrance, waiting for the call. They are earth to earth, ash to ash... words have meaning. They are dust for now, but will yet be raised. This is the resurrection the saducees did not believe. Its very Jewish, as it should be, until the Alexandrian school fooled about with it and led us astray.

I also have heard from Derek and Sharon Gilbert that Caesarea Philippi is located at the base of Mt. Hermon in Bashan where the Watchers came down in Genesis 6. This Mount was also the place of transfiguration; Jesus' declaration of war against the kingdom of darkness. I can only imagine the chaotic tizzy he sent the hordes of hell into on that day.

Yes Jesus was suggesting that Abraham Isaac and Jacob were alive. What he couldn't tell you then but I can tell you now is that they were alive in the person's respectfully, of Stephen/Abraham the first Martyr, Isaac/ Lazarus the first raised after 4 days. And Jacob/ Paul, who was more zealous than all his brethren after the Law. Brands plucked from the fire. Does not the potter have power over the clay?

Ive been following Dr.Hieser for close to 2yrs now. In that time i have only disagreed with him once and its on this topic. I believe the rock is not a place its not a person its the revelation that Jesus the Son of the living God. The kingdom is built stone by stone by revealing to each stone/child of God who Jesus is. By way of concession i agree Jesus empties the rhelm of the dead, seeing that He is the ressurrection and the life. That is accomplished by revelation.

I like your explanation but are you sure Jesus is not the rock? After all He was a stonemason, not a carpenter. He was known in the Bible as the Rock of my salvation, my strong foundation, He set my feet on a rock, a stumbling rock to Jews etc.

I thought Baal's role in Canaanite religion, or others, was lord of weather, fertility, and/or war. Sometimes referred to as "Prince of the Earth."

Just as a reminder to you Dr. Heiser, Matthew was not written in Greek rather in Aramaic. Hence what Jesus actually said was,"Thou art Kephas and upon this Kephas i will build my Church." The Keys refer to Isaiah 22:20-23 and Revelation 3:7. You really don't know your Bible.

He said GATES of hell, these gates to Hades are all over the Mediterranean. There is one in Rome the city near the tomb of Romulus, the founder of Rome. The twins Romulus and Remus were abandoned, suckled by the she wolf. The were adopted by the woodmen. The Romans were horrified by human sacrifice especially of children. Jesus will conquer death. Hades is the God of the underworld. Peter is his prime minister. Jesus is the emperor of the coming kingdom. The Roman's hated Baal. Their arch enemy was HanniBaal. Scipio defeated him. Cesar's uncle put the Phoenician cities to rubble.

I mean it's all fine to know more in depth meaning of the passage, which also is present even in a plain reading of the material, without getting into the geographical significance, or details regarding names of the demons, idols... but to ignore meaning about St. Peter who called by the Lord revealed his real identity, as a mouth of all Apostoles, being called Petrus: Male equivalent of Petra - "rock", or as it would be in Aramaic: s “you are Kepha ” and “on this kepha “, not mentioning significance of God changing peoples names in the Bible (Abram -> Abraham, Jacob -> Israel)... this is beyond me. Binding and loosing as only parallel to exorcising demons, so disregarding and not mentioning an office of the prime minister in Davidic monarchy, who had in king's of Israel absence keys to the city (Jerusalem), and he would exercise power over it in his absence:

I believe that Dr. Heisers' interpretation is slightly off. This passage is saying that the gates of hell "death will not prevail over Christ building His church. He will not be locked in hell, He will come back through deaths gates to rise again and because of that, He will build His church. As we know, He did just that and death has no sting for those in that church. 1Cor.15:51 and following. So, the emphasis is on the fact that even death itself, will not stop His building of the church!
