Unfortunately this still doesn't explain how a 3rd party cookie knows where it's coming from. I understand that it's being send to another address, but how does the 3d party know the source of the cookie? Is the browser sending some kind of a refferal together with the cookie? I cannot imagine any other way for them to find out about the website I'm on.

Nice explanation that as a developer was looking for to wrap my head around this tricky concept

Personally I use ublock origin and Cookie Autodelete. You whitelist the useful cookies and everything else is discarded.
