Hey Ben! Thanks for the informative video. I am still confused though. I have a desktop PC with GTX 1060 6 GB graphics card and. Intel i5 7400 (7th gen, 4 cores, 6 mb cache) processor and 500 watts supply power. I am an industrial product designer, from time to time I do 3D modelling and rendering, but most of the time photo editing, video editing and audio post-production I make for my projects. Ever sinCe I bought my pc, I've dreamed of upgrading the parts of it to the fullest potential the current motherboard allows. Right now I think of investing to i7 7700K CPU, and also a CPU cooler. I checked the bottlebeck issue and it seems 'the graphics card is too weak for the 7700K.' Right now my build works pretty balanced, during processor intensive tasks my processor and gpu works together with only %8 performance difference from maximum. Do you think it is a worth investment to do or maybe I better expand my RAM capacity and get a m2.nvMe SSD, in the future when I have the money upgrade my system entirely... (I have micro ATX case) Which plan makes more sense? Thanks for your time.

So my PC has started freaking out while video editing, importing clips into software is slower than usual, sometimes while the software is open windows wont play videos, I get black screen, is this a GPU issue ? Or CPU ... videos on the web will also flicker unless they are full screen :(

when it comes to the render nothing beats multiple gpus for heavy work loads. I would rather have 6x 3080s on a mining board with a core i5 then a couple 3080s with a 32 core and a 1500 dollar motherboard anyday. It wasnt untill I had 48 gigs of gpu did davinci stop booting me out or resetting

Is the 4k playback only trash when editing? I Just want to save some 4k videos on my laptop and watch them. Does gpu matter in this scenario or us the cpu enough?

So, the CPU is like a Thinker, and GPU is like an Artist.
Thinker can arrange task to the best person like Artist to finish an art. Thinker can do the art themselves, but only by trying so hard with a lot of time to finish the same task. But GPU can do it in faster time. GPU/Artist can't do or start the task without the order from CPU. that means GPU will always need CPU, but CPU will need GPU for more efficient working process.

Just purely looking at smooth playback (i don't care much about rendering time as i can just leave it and move on to work on another computer), would you buy a laptop with stronger GPU or stronger CPU? I got offer of i5 10300H + RTX3060 and R5 5600H cpu + RTX3050ti around same budget price point.

Or maybe, if you would like to video editing and rendering on a laptop, you need to buy a high-end laptop with top cooling performance and not that fancy sh*tcakes...
If you have a laptop with high performance cooling ( like in many gaming laptops) you can forget the thermal throttling... :)

In your personal opinion, do you think that the Ryzen 3900x CPU will pair well with the GEFORCE RTX 3070 for solid playback speeds? Also, do you think I would be better off with liquid cooling (kraken x63) vs. air cooling (Noctua NH-D15) to get the most performance out of my CPU with overclocking?

I'm about to build my first PC and wish to have the best experience while editing footage in premier pro, so the last thing I want to do is drop $2000 on a new build and experience the same aches and pains I have right now with my 2014 Macbook Pro. It is beyond aggravating to see choppy playback when editing footage, so I would preferably like to eliminate this at all costs.

Great video. Now that you defined the borders and opened the discussion, would you recommend any one of the new NVIDIA GPUs (RTX 3070, 3080, ...)? My assumption would be the CPU is already high performance enough (like Intel i7-9900K 5Ghz) and edition is performing on RTX 20 series (Like 2070 Super).

Excellent video! I've been reading and watching a lot of GPU and eGPU tests lately and they all more or less say the same thing. This video really addresses some of the unmentioned limitations. I'd be curious as to how much of a speed boost one could get by adding an exterior fan to the bottom of the laptop.

Thanks Ben for the informative video! I am getting a Dell XPS 17, i7-10750H, 16gb RAM, 1TB SSD, and GTX1650 Ti. I will be mainly doing 4K video editing of around 10 to 15 min in Davinci Resolve. Is this combo good enough in terms of playback smoothness and export time? Thanks a lot.

I understand the basics of CPUs: i7 is the best (aside from i9 maybe), H suffix is better, more GHZ is better, intel 10th gen and Ryzen 3rd gen is most current. But what about GPUs? Any good resources on the GPUs available and what's best?
