In my ignorance I'd say the reason why "they" want to retire the A10 has nothing to do with the a/c itself and all to do with major corporations wanting the big bucks of a new project/order!

Because the A10 had to retire! and with the delay of the F35 we had to find a solution. So this solution was released before the F35 on the combat fields. And given the bureaucrats who had retired him despite the plebiscite of the soldiers on the ground and for support. just because not beautiful less sexy than the F35 it had to come out! and given the delay and still not operational on the battlefield it was extended and these detractors were able to see how wrong they were in Afghanistan, how many lives saved? and not electronic for modern conflicts for strategists? well if the troops had to fight like in Ukraine they would be much more effective and efficient than this F35....But in the meantime how much budget swallowed up for the F35 and no more program and still not in activity, stealth just for its army?

The Air Force would be foolish to replace A10 aircraft with the F-35. The F-35 is not capable of replacing the firepower and ground support requirements needed to protect our ground troops. How much ammo and ordnance does the A-10 have compared to the F-35. It’s not the politicians with their butts on the ground, that are being shot at … ask the troops who’s lives are on the line, who they would trust more with ground support ! Cheaper and more capable air support is a must ! Not going with the corrupt politicians who are swayed by bribery and political favors in place of the multitude of life saving experiences on record.

Train the Marines and Army to fly this awesome plane, the warthog was designed to protect them on the ground

why not make a new version of the A-10 That has some upgraded gadgetry and a similar feel. Bolstered for sure, some tweaks here and there but the price point jump is just a money grab by the army and not the government in this situation the Generals want their kickbacks for doing nothing.

What's so controversial about this plane? It's an important tool for ground troops. Bad ass pilots and planes. The F 35 cannot do what the A-10 can do. Not even close

i like Swedish airplanes . We had 1500 in the 60s and 70s . Not bad for a small country. and it was state of the art.

Just update the A-10. They are relatively cheap, very tough, battled tested and highly effective. For CAS they NEED durability. Stealth is nice on the way from point A to point B, but once it arrives on target and people can literally SEE the plane, ... well if your life was on the line, would you prefer stealth or durability? I'd choose durability.

Well Congress needs to take their butts out to the field where the action is and then say whether or not the HOGS need to be taken out of service when their butts get saved by those pilots flying those planes come in and save them from getting overrun or blown to *hit...

The A10 is like the ugly chick you go home with after last call not the prettiest or sleekesst but she saves you in a pinch I've been saved by both

Why USA don't use or sell this aircraft to LATAM ?

it's important to have both conventional aircraft and stealth aircraft in the same role for cost and volume. can you imagine a f35 with finicky stealth coatings and maintenance and high costs strafing lower priority targets? the a10 can do that and take damage and be repaired and do so in greater sortie volumes for a fraction of the price

Nothing can currently replace the A-10 effectively, certainly not the F-35. Phasing out the A-10 is a massive tactical & strategic error that will cost US forces dearly. The F-35 has some uses, but absolutely not CAS.

I witnessed an A-10 land with only one wing, if thats not a testament to the damn thing I dont know what is. Ask anyone in an infantry role, they will all agree the sound that gun makes gives you hope. While the F-35 has the tech advantage, I just dont think it can top the A-10.

Using uranium 238 rounds is nuclear war. When the rounds hit armor they ignite and leave uranium dust that contaminates the area on par with Chernobyl. Uranium dust causes death by inhalation and also enters the food chain. This is no way for the US to make friends.

Why weren’t these used at extortion 17? Strange how a lot of times air strikes and calling in artillery took forever in Afghanistan because of the so called red tape. They do not care about the troops on the ground anymore like Vietnam and first gulf war in Iraq 1991. Now you were more likely to get a MOH then get an air strike in Afghanistan approved. Sickening to listen to the troops on the ground screaming for help and it being ignored by command heads.

Everyone who flies it that i know calls it simply...."Hog". Loaded with the GAU Avenger, A 30 mm hydraulically driven seven-barrel Gatling-style autocannon.
