I'm running a FX-8300 at 3.6GHz with turbo boost on. Which gives it short bursts of 4.2GHz if needed.
Together with 32Gb RAM. RTX 3060 12Gb 192-bit. SATA SSD for OS (motherboard can't boot M.2) and PCIe M.2 adapter SSD for games.

It's still going strong. Playing Halo Infinite at 1080p with High settings. I get 80-100 FPS on 4 v 4 games and 70-85 on 12 v 12 maps.

Forza 4 at max is over 100 FPS with occasional dips. But minor optimizations remedies that.
I play on my TV which is 60Hz but I clock it to 75Hz in the Nvidia Control panel when gaming.

I'm still running my 8350 from a build I did a decade ago with upgrades here and there. Specs: FX8350, ASRock 990FX Fatal1ty MOBO, 30gb, Crucial SSD, 11TB SATA, RX480 GPU... I have used it for video editing, games, VR videos, plex server with tv tuner and I continue to use it daily. One of these days I'll budget a new build, performance just has suffered enough lol.

Just barely today upgraded my system. Been running that 8350 for many years at this point. While streaming was possible and honestly wasnt bad, but i mostly play games like civ v that still chugs however sometimes.

Overall after 9 years with that chip i got wayyyy more than my money's worth for it. That paired with my GTX 780 has been great and im still not retiring the build.

However i have a ryzen 7 5700x as of today, and im excited to see if i can stress the shit out of it. Though it probably wont overclock like the 8350. That chip just takes beating after beating

December 2023, and I'm still rolling with the 8370 Black Edition on an Asus Sabertooth 990FX 2.0 board. Built the system in 2014. Handles everything I throw at it, was even running Win11 Insider until they pushed away "unsupported" CPUs. Win10 is fine, Debian 12 rocks on it. Running a Win7 VM in the background whilst watching this video.

The dual GTX960s are the slow parts, but still manage decently in 1080p games. Most of the games I play regularly, like GTA V and WoW, are several years old anyway.

When I got the class-action suit notice over the "not true eight-core CPU" controversy, I chucked the letter in the trash. I've never felt ripped off, and have gotten nearly a decade of value from it.

The 8350 is better for overclocking though. Luck of the draw. I love keeping these old bad ass rigs tip top. Not sure why.
lol All my games run well enough to play. That avx instruction is why I started messing with the FX systems for games. Cheap too.

Between a close a friend and myself, we've been able to scrounge together enough parts to build a computer using the fx8350 and GTX 970. We've been slowly round robinin that computer to our friends to get them into the PC gaming community as their first build.
Obviously, this gets them hooked, and we work out a budget to get them onto a newer platform. It's been a successful endeavor.

When everyone has their own computer, the fx8350 build will be retired and become a plex server. So yes we've been getting plenty of use out of the old girl

Every desktop in my house is still running on AM3+ architecture. I originally built the machines back when it was still possible to build a decent gaming PC with only $500-$1000. Today just a 'gaming' motherboard costs almost $500 without CPU nor RAM. Anyhow I 'maxed out' all my systems with 32GB DDR3, FX 8300 series 'Vishera' CPUs. The most significant performance boost came from GPU upgrades (the performance increase from PCIE 2.0x to 4.0x is negligible for gaming) and phasing out all HDDs and replacing them with Samsung SSDs. For my main system I got rid of the optical drives altogether (CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray about to go the way of floppies) and upgraded to a CPU/GPU 2x360 water cooled setup that runs virtually silent compared to the jet engine about to take off that it used to be. I can run every latest game there is on a water cooled Radeon RX 6900 XT (that cost me $1000 on 2021 but now retails at $1,300+ TODAY), even abominations like Forspoken, Clank and Ratchet's Rift apart, Baldur's Gate 3, etc. Otherwise I simply cannot afford the latest shit so I finally gave in and bought the woman a PS5 she wanted cause it's literally magnitudes cheaper than today's 'modest' gaming GPUs; there's a special place reserved in gamers' hell for whomever created crypto gpu mining.

Just do you guys know, AM4 coolers work with AM3/AM3+! An insane (and cheap!) upgrade for AM3 CPUs is to grab a second hand Wraith Prism cooler off of Ebay or a friend. They are overkill cooling for AM3 and look awesome as well. That's what I did before i made the switch to Ryzen, i threw an AM4 cooler on my Phenom x4 965be and my temps dropped by over 50%, it was crazy! Definitely gave my machine a new lease on life until I made the switch to Ryzen myself. I still use my AM3+ system to this day as a backup PC, visitor LAN gaming rig, an entertainment center media server. The temps hardly even budge from idle to load, never seen anything like it. So yeah, if you have an old AM3 machine throw a modern am4/am5 cooler on it and it will give it a new lease on life!

I always had ram issues with my FX-8350. It did not see all of its ram. I always thought it was the motherboard. Replaced with a Ryzen 7 5800x last yard but did keep my FX-8350 as a backup. I found a really cheap AM3+ motherboard with M.2 capability. When I pulled the CPU from the board, I found out why I was having ram issues. I appeared to have bent pins 10 years ago and had never realized it. Tried to bend the pins back, which I have done before, but one broke. At that point it was either except the loss for the motherboard or buy a replacement CPU. Decided that I would go ahead and get a replacement CPU even though I could likely get a Ryzen 5 2600 for less. Still cheaper than a replacement CPU and motherboard though. This new FX system has 32 GB or ram and is paired with a GTX 1070 and actually runs some games I tested it with pretty well.

Other than that. 1080p gaming with every thing else was just fine. This was one of the best PCs I've ever had. The 8 core FX 8350 CPU was really way far too good for its time and AMD knew this. This why AMD released the Ryzen line of CPUs and even with the Ryzen line of CPUs, one needed to move up to the Ryzen 3800X just to match the 8 core performance of the FX 8350. Why is this? The FX 8350 is "REAL" 8 core CPU. Although the FX 8350 use more power than most CPUs at its time of launching, the FX 8350 did have to run 8 real CPU cores. Unlike the Intel CPUs which promoted their Hyper-threading as "REAL" CPUs this was in fact not true as third party tests clearly showed that the i5 2500 could run head to head with the bigger and badder i7 2600 which had an additional 2 MB more cache and 4 additional threads.

This is exactly why computer shops stock on the i5 2500 and i5 2500K were always sold out. People knew after reading the reviews that the i5 2500 line could run head to head with the flagship Intel i7 2600 and i7 2700 for less $$$$.

This same exact situation also happened when AMD released the FX line of CPUs. However, at that same point in time, no software developer really knew how to take full advantage of multi-core CPUs and processing until just recently (after 2020). This is exactly why FX CPUs still command a premium even on the used computer market.

REAL CPU cores > REAL work. Hyper-threads are not real cores thus cannot do any real work whatsoever. Hyper-threads are exactly what they are, they are just extra threads that are designed to bring more information to the CPU (if the CPU is capable and can process the additional information supplied by the extra hyper-thread).

This is an awful selection of games in your testing suite to the point that it almost seems malicious. CSGO is older than the CPU, the 8350 was literally the recommended spec for witcher 3, DE is a game that is famously easy to run - so much so that a celeron can get close to 200fps, and hogwarts is a last-gen game that runs on APUs that were made a year after the 8350 released.

Really begs the question of what exactly is the point of this video. Of course games that were designed for that part will run reasonably on it, interesting insights are what it cant run for technical or throughput reasons. Why would you waste our time with such a boring thesis? (that's rhetorical, it's SEO bait).
