2022 - Rocking the Web Bloat: Modern Gopher, Gemini and the Small Internet

Super informative; loved it .. have a ton of things to research from this video. My only issue was his usage of the term "surveillance capitalism"; seemed like a bit of a misnomer to me. I think a more accurate term to describe what he was referring to would be "globalism."

I don't really like the "capitalism thingy" to be mentioned in a talk like this. While it states the obvious that often times surveillance and bloat are about money, it excludes all other reasons like whole governments spying on people just to intimidate them and whatnot.

We're seeing stuff like this being abused nowadays in the shape of governments getting our freedoms so that "evil corporations won't hurt us".

A comment to add to this talk: WAIS is no longer a thing (at least as far as I was able to find) and as of June 2023 The Library of Congress' z39.50 public catalog access is being shrunk to only between computers at the actual site. Gopher/Gemini is a great place to be though. Beats the heck out of the bloated side of the www.

It was fun in the old days. I wish there was more gopher acceptance.

This idea actually makes sense for me. I want internet to be small and fast for those who need it.

I'm looking, and failing to find anything related to finger networks. I am very interested in this.
