There is literally pictures of every animal if you use your binoculars you can study them, which pins each on the overall map when zoomed in enough. Check the various locations. Either in rivers or on the overhead plateaus overlooking forests.

Btw. The buck trinket dosen't always work. It is by chance that your carcass will improve. Water dose not degrade a carcass as well.

Go to the road in between Tanner’s Reach and Aurora Basin. I was able to get 7 robins in about 5 minutes just walking up and down the road following the Lower Montana River south with my horse following me.

I’ve spent hours looking for rats and cardinals but all I get are 2 stars!!! I’ve got like 5 3 star woodpeckers

in limpany, on the roadsign that says strawberry/valentine, a little woodpecker will spawn on top of it, you’ll either get sparrows or woodpeckers just wait until a woodpecker spawns

2. Rats in the saloon
3. Cardinals in the air

* I found running into the jail cell and back out, caused the random sign post birds to respawn. There are 2 signs and first time was vulture, then blue Jay, then vulture, then woodpecker. Check them both. They are side by side, kinda.

I still can't believe that the trinket lets you use the varmint rifle on small birds, I've never heard anyone else say that. I gave your area a try, but couldn't find ANY small birds. I'll try again later.

Good lord I hate the Woodpeckers... it took maybe about a day for the cardinal, and less than 5 minutes for the rat, but oh god, the woodpeckers are about to drive me batty

Man. I got like 15 GOOD cardinal carcasses. And I have the trinket.

The dowes ranch is s good place for small birds, some spawn on the fence to the crops and a cardinal or jay should spawn on the washing line behind the house. Use small game arrows and dead eye

how could you have perfect carcass with an rifle?? in the info they said that we need to use a small arrow for the woodpecker and cardinal bird clean kill.

I have shot 15 cardinals with trinket and not one perfect yet!

Also the rock on the river spawns the cardinals and woodpecker. Got mine there.

All this because I want to see a squirrel wearing boxing gloves and a mole with glasses sitting in a chair reading the paper...

It's been 4 hours. Still no 3☆ woodpecker. Only 2☆

Great location for the cardinal found two three stars within 10 minutes

I found both the wood pecker and Cardinal above Annesburg the River that runs down sitting on a rock. Just go up and down on the river and make sure it isn’t raining and during the day! Found them both within 10 minutes

I got 8 good cardinals carcass 💀

10/20/2023 waited for 2 in game days staring at that "Strawberry/Valentine/Flatneck Station" and the "Welcome to Limpany" signposts and it never spawned any bird EXCEPT one crow..

I've come to the conclusion that I'm never gonna complete this side mission.

I know its 5 years later but i started searching for a woodpecker since 2023 and i didnt even find one

U can get all 3 carcases for part 1 in fort brennand. 1 rat 1 woodpecker and 1 cardinal

Bro how you get a perfect cardinal or woodpecker with varmint actually? Any 3 star perfect one I see it goes down to 2 star after I use varmint, only small game arrows work for me 🤷‍♂️

Having trouble with rats?
So did I, took 5 minutes to find both birds and about 3 hours to get a good enough rat.

A lot of people say check the saloon, not a single rat there in 3 hours. 2 found in sherrif's after placing predator bait. But one was poor and one got away, aftrr that the game refused to spawn rats. I left the area several times. Sleps several days, still the game didn't spawn a single rat for about 1.5 hour.

What finally worked was to kill a stagg (any animal probably works) and place the body in the middle of the burned town. I slept 20 hours and came back to 2 rats eating the stagg.

Keep in mind it might seem like no rats are there because they's so small they can hide behind the animal carass. Take a lap and check thoroughly.

The first building on the left in limpany has a rat every time as well.

First thing I found when I went into limpany was four or five brown rats, running away from me I didn’t even see them. The first thing I saw was two vultures. One was glitched into the building, but when I actually went through the fence into the shard ground area, four or five brown rats ran away from me, and I shot three of them, and they were all good, even though they had two stars and I have the buck trinket

There’s actually two other dead bodies in limpany in the jail house, but they are mummified and they don’t have anything on them one you can’t even get to it locked in the cell, but this dead body is always there and limp any

how are you shooting it with the varmint rifle and getting 3 stars every time I do it I degrades the quality of the bird

Another solid location for rats is the cave under the Elyssium Falls. Just go to the big cave section (which has sunlight and is pretty big. Cant miss it). There you can collect perfect rat and bat carcasses
