ОтветитьMy Dad served on the USCG Arundel in the Battle of the Atlantic WWII, headed to the South Pacific at the end of the war. Enlisted at age 17 in 1942 right out of high school, exited for a non military career with New England Telephone in 1946. Well done, Dad. (1924-2018).
ОтветитьJust like that movie; Das Boot.
ОтветитьI was born in 1948. Every elementary schoolchild went to the Museum Of Science And Industry in Chicago at least once. Two of the highlights were the coal mine and U505. U505 was captured by Admiral Gallery. Her Enigma Machine and code books helped win the war..
ОтветитьHedgehog, another British invention, first used in 1940
ОтветитьThis is the same head hunting group responsible for capturing the U-505, now at the Museum of Science and Industry…… Gallery was almost court martialed for that action…..
ОтветитьIt was called "Hedgehog," because, when unloaded it looked like one. Americans would've called it a porcupine, but the weapon was British.
ОтветитьWhat's more interesting is that this task force sailed with the specific intention of driving a U-boat to the surface so that it could be captured. They succeeded with the U-505, which now on display at the Museum of Industry in Chicago. As a boy I walked through it.
ОтветитьThat's U 505 not 515. The Uboat was captured. I
Ответитьas a submariner you must ask yourself if you go to war, do i really want to die inside this tub
Ответить1. I heard 4 explosions
ОтветитьA great story, but a poor representation of US sailors, long hair and everyone having a beard. US sailors in WW2 on board surface ships shaved and maintained a clean appearance. At least according to my father, who served in the Navy during World War Two.
ОтветитьA little attention to the haircuts and shaving might have made it look a little more accurate
Ответитьဆီဆွတ်မှ ရမှာနော်
နောက် မဟုတ်ရင် တံထွေးထွေးထည့်ပေါ့။
A Great British weapon
ОтветитьI guess they already got rid of their Enigma machine.
ОтветитьThe captain of U-515 was killed while trying to escape P.O.W. camp late 1944 .
ОтветитьAs usual they don't mention the hedgehog was a British invention
ОтветитьCalled a hedgehog because it looked like it had porcupine quills…..so wouldn’t they have called it porcupine…
Ответить"Mister Hirsch, step away from that bulkhead. The shockwave from one of these explosions could snap your spine." - Lieutenant Andrew Tyler U-571
ОтветитьRam them
ОтветитьOne day, the US Navy will invent something for ASW. Until then, they rely on the British, Dutch, and Germans to invent everything they use. They will, however, continue to pretend that they invented sonar, depth charges, hedgehog, ASW homing torpedoes, towed arrays, convoys, etc., just as they pretend they captured Enigma
ОтветитьIncomplete explanation of the characteristics of a hedgehog vs a depth charge.
ОтветитьHe should have surfaced during the night
ОтветитьVery interesting story and exciting
ОтветитьAt least those sailors in the U-Boat survived the war & didn't cause more suffering to others. Good for everyone!
Ответить"Its my first day"
ОтветитьOh,the US Navy uniform in this video are awful. Coming from the Smithsonian I would have expected them to research a bit better. The story was done well, but I was completely distracted by the uniforms. I don’t know German uniforms, but I bet they were mangled too.
Ответить‘And then the Americans release a dogshit of freedom’
Ответить❤❤❤
Ответитьאין כמו אימא בעולם!!!!!!!
ОтветитьIt's crazy how good we become at killing
ОтветитьAmerica 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Ответитьhe in checkmate
ОтветитьJust think about NOT BATHING during a U-Boat patrol for weeks at a time. These guys must've smelled pretty darned rank and gross. I don't think I could have gotten close to those Germans coming out of that steel tube. A dead skunk might have smelled like a flower compared to the U-Boaters being at sea for weeks and not being able to even wipe down with a damp wash rag.
Ответитьthe hedgehog scene was recoded on USS Stewart, i went to that ship so many times id recognize it from 100 miles away
ОтветитьThat is one branch of service I would not want to be in during wartime.
ОтветитьThe terror experienced by sailors in a U-boat under attack is un imaginable.
ОтветитьType VII C TYPE IX
ОтветитьLOL, call that defeat, sounds like a huge win to me not to drown in the ocean
ОтветитьAh man, I miss using that stuff against surface vessels in NavyField. Surprisingly effective.
ОтветитьThe USS O'Flaherty was a John C Butler class destroyer escort
ОтветитьBeing attacked by a hedgehog mortar could even be more terrifying than depth charges. You might not seen hear to mortars coming on sonar amongst the noise of enemy ships etc. Suddenly, your sub is rocked by a silent killer sea mortar round, with the enemy destroyer still behind you but still able to attack and keep track of you. The first encounter with a hedgehog mortar for the German U-boats must have been absolutely terrifying.
ОтветитьWhy isn't the navy crew wearing any wests and helmets in this battle?
ОтветитьAdmiral Daniel V. Gallery also captured U-505, now berthed in Chicago. The last time the US Navy captured an enemy vessel was during the War of 1812. Admiral Gallery would write both non-fiction and some of the funniest books I've ever read.
ОтветитьThe fuze caps were still on the hedgehogs when fired.
ОтветитьThe sound of the hedgehog firing is not even remotely like it sounded in real life. Also the haircuts of all the American officers is a travesty to how an American naval officer looked like in WWII.
ОтветитьWho thought it would be a good idea to drown out the narration with awful background music!
ОтветитьWith all the movies and books I read regarding WWII, I never heard of this anti-sub weapon before.
ОтветитьOne mistake the U boat involved was not the 515 it was the 505 captured by Admiral Daniel Gallery ( a Chicago native whose brother happened to be the commissioner of the Chicago Park District) he quickly gave the order the first time it was given
Since the war of 1812 of Away All Boarders a boarding party got to the sub in time to close the seacocks and disable the scuttling charges, it was the first time that an operational Uboat was captured during the war, the boat was towed to Bermuda where it was hidden, and it's crew was placed under quarantine to conceal the fact that it had been captured intact, along with its code books, and it's enigma machine, after the war it was towed to Chicago, where it was placed alongside the Museum of Science And Industry, where it remained for many years before an addition to house it and other large exhibits was built, tours of it led to my nephews becoming a submariner in the U.S Navy.
