Remembering the Armistice of Mudros

This service commemorates the Armistice of Mudros. This armistice came into effect at noon on 31 October 1918 and signalled the end of the First World War in the Middle East.

The Armistice was signed by British Admiral Arthur Calthorpe and representatives of the Ottoman Empire. The signing took place aboard the Royal Navy warship HMS Agamemnon while anchored in Mudros Bay, Lemnos.

Lemnos played an important role during the First World War. It was located just 50 kilometres from the Dardanelles and operated as an advance base during the Gallipoli campaign. Wounded soldiers were also evacuated there for medical treatment. Over 200 Australian and New Zealand troops are buried in a cemetery in the town of Mudros.
