Hello, brother and sister homesteaders! We just took our first set of meat pigs to the processor yesterday. My desire was to process them myself. Is there any books or videos or workshops that can train us the processing of our own pigs? Because of the resistance of the pigs to get on the trailer and the trip to the butcher, I'm not sure I want to raise any more pigs. Raising them was a joy (ALMOST every day). I went out and talked with them as they followed me around the yard. I'll miss them but love the thought of raising our own food. Thank you for your channel. People need to know that pigs can tell within minutes if the wire shorts out and loses power. I don't know if they can hear the sound of the current or maybe feel it, but they know the second the power goes off. I raised hundreds of hogs and I learned to keep the weeds and grass under the fence killed off. Pigs love grass and will try and eat it without being shocked. If they touch the fence when it is off, they are GONE!

I actually love the suggestion to start with a feeder pig. I think I'm going to use that for all the different types of animals on my new homestead! Thank you for that.

How much does it cost you to raise one of these pigs from the time you get them to the time you process them?

I had bad experiences with electric fences. I have had pigs going into shock and dead.

My problem is that I'll grow attached to the animals
But this is the best way to raise the animals
In the backyard, they get to eat, play and sleep.

i just got pigs for the 2nd time. learned some very hard mistakes the first time around!

Glad to see how you progressed from buying a few piglets and having someone else slaughter and then butcher them into breeding and process your own pigs. Because keeping a boar around for stud service is costly, I would AI breed the sows. If you know the signs, you know when to AI them. A 600 lb boar is unruley, and pretty much goes where he want to. As for the butchering, may I suggest providing each pig with two cans of beer... they like it, it keeps them calm and you actually marinate the meat from the inside out. I do not poke the pig, but rather dispatch with a single shot. A gambrel works great, and a SawsAll lives up to its name as you cut down evenly through the backbone. The trick is to remove 100% of the spinal cord.

I plan on hopefully getting pigs to breed and sell and I’ve already got two pens built with panels and now I’ve gotta get wood to build the shelter for each one and gotta get stock tanks for them and I’ve already got food containers and I’ve had them before but it’s been a couple years but my friend has pigs and we hang out all the time so I’ve been around pigs a lot of my life so I think I’m ready

my friend had a sow bred and only got one baby. others I knew got nine babies. They learnt to have to cook slop they got from throw away resteraunt or kitchens. One learnt because it got sick on that food and pet physician said he had to cook it before feeding it out to hogs.

i want to start rasing some pigs so if i try not to make any mistakes and want to start with feeder pigs should i purchase male or females for feeder pigs

My 5yr old grandson returned from kindergarten this year informing is that we need to raise animals to eat because that's why God gave us animals.... now he is actively asking what he is eating to confirm which animals we need to raise to eat so far we have pigs chickens cows eating and milking A goat for milk.... he would also like to raise bunnies to eat and wants to try eating a snake! Lol once he learned God gave him meat he is on a mission!!! Lol. I think we will give chickens a try, maybe bunnys
