If someone was going to make a little smoke device for fun out in an abandoned gravel pit And the shop sent the person sodium nitrate instead of potassium nitrate... Could a person use sodium nitrate instead of potassium nitrate? Thanks in advance.

Used to make those when i was in my teens in the 80s. Local drug store sold potassium nitrate otc back then & cheap. A coke can of the stuff put out a LOT of smoke.

Is it illegal to make smoke bombs?

The way I make it is a lot better and easier. You don't need to cook the ingredients until they turn brown. What you do is mix the potassium nitrate and sugar together until they are evenly mixed. In a pot add wax as in candle wax from Walmart and melt it then just add your powder. Mix it well and put in a container. It will burn a lot slower and produce a ton of smoke so be careful where you light it.

Me and a friend made this over a bunson burner once. It got too hot and ended up igniting while my friends head was over it. He luckily got out the way but he almost went blind. While cooking it, ALWAYS be aware that it can ignite at any time when it starts to caramelize. I recommend safety glasses while cooking it. Also you don’t need to cook it. I’ll ignite without cooking it but it’s not as much smoke

you can make potassium nitrate from poop...... confederate army made theirs form bat poo. easy to make.

There are better ways to do this. Also most swat teams will have machines to easily clear out this smoke and have goggles that see through it. If you want to make this really good you will need a mixture that makes the smoke very hot. I can't name this for legal reasons but trust me it helps out alot.

Well.... I just found what I'm doing tonight.

This recipe should really be placed in cardboard tube rather than a aluminum foil ball. It gives a better reaction. Also lowering the ignition temperature with potassium Chlorate rather than potassium nitrate works much better when it’s dry. However it does not work as well if one uses paraffin wax. It also becomes rocket fuel if one uses the 60/40 mix. It’s better at a 50/50, and or a 40/60 (40% potassium Chlorate, 60% sucrose)

I don't understand what they mean when they say "don't ingest it, don't allow skin contact" potassium nitrate is non toxic in small amounts, and it's used as a preservative in many processed meats. Nevertheless though, don't just eat a bunch of potassium nitrate.

Since the sugar is getting caramelized won't it get stuck on the frying pan? and then how do you possibly remove it without breaking the pan itself?
