I use simply optimized, and get roughly 100 more frames per second than this method on my older MacBook, but I used to use this method with optifine as it renders shaders faster, (If a bit blurred.).

you must not mess with the shadow quality setting as it breaks with most shaders that use shadows to make other stuff work, you should only modify the render quality
