A Time to Kill was the first Grisham novel I read way back in the day (probably around 1994). It was my gateway drug into his novels. He couldn't write fast enough for me when I was in high school. My favorite Grisham is The Runaway Jury followed closely by The Client. I can't recommend these novels enough. Glad you enjoyed this book.

I've never gotten into John Grisham, but after this review, I'm wondering what's wrong with me! This sounds like such a complex and topical novel -- must pick it up! Or better yet -- what Grisham would you recommend a newbie start with?

Only John Grishman I've ever read is The Pelican Brief.

This definitely sounds intriguing. One of my best friends is currently in law school so I may try to convince him to read it with me and get his take on it too. :)

I've never read any Grisham, but I really want to read this book. I saw the movie years ago, and thought it was really good. I only found out within the last year or two that it was a book, so it's been on my tbr for a while. -Amber

I've read about 3 or 4 of his novels, including 'A Time to Kill'. I've enjoyed each of them, and I'd like to get all his novels in paperback. : )

Hi Josh- John Grisham is my "beach read" go to author. I have loved this book for a long time and enjoyed your review. I always thought that this book didn't feel like it was his debut. For being a first book it is better than some of his later work I think.

Mr. Grisham is one of those authors I've been interested in reading, especially since he used to be lawyer. It sounds like he would paint a more accurate (less dramatic than usually seen on tv) depiction of law and trials. I've never seen the film adaption, but as usual with internet culture I know the scene with Mr. Jackson screaming "I hope they burn in..." :-D

I don't get this review at all. The book doesn't follow the little girl at all. She's in chapter 1 and then barely mentioned again. Although she was the victim the whole book focuses on the impact on her Dad rather than on her. And the perpetrators weren't "eventually caught" at all. They were caught almost immediately and the author spends more time talking about the food served in the local restaurant than the way they were caught. We learn more about the personality of the man who runs the restaurant that Jake eats his breakfast at, than the poor rape victim or her mother. Or Jake's wife. It's my first John Grisham book and it's made me question whether he can write woman at all or would want to. Loved the movie though.

What do you think is the author tone?
