Why India's Fair Skin Business Is Booming

This obsession comes from their 5,000 year old religion which described the gods as fair skinned, with a complexion like milk.

The fact that in a country where most people aren't fair skinned, being tan is considered "unideal" or "unattractive" but I'm over here in Germany constantly having people tell me that my skin is "too light" (whatever the hell that means..) Although most people have pretty light skin over here (not as light as mine but defenitely still light) is just so ironic😭

As long as we hate ourselves and who we are how can we expect anyone else to love us?

Seriously all Indian movies i watched i didn't see anyone too dark. Normally Indians i saw they have darker skin

I am European and I prefer fair skin too... Nothing bad about that. Everyone has his/ her preferences.

It's your choice... Of course, if there is a social pressure, that's a bad thing and shouldn't be supported... And if you get disciminated because of your skin tone, this should be condemned.

I don't like the way how every Indian men of every color even he is brown skinned prefers only fair skin girls ... This is the reality of the Indian society

Thank you for this report. My heart goes out to the women of India. I though the standards were hard in the US, but they are literally bleaching away what makes them unique and beautiful.

My Indian friend 'Jagu' - not exactly fair, belittled those from his deep South pointing to something pitch black - 'Like that' he said. Prob Afros now indigenous.

I don't know about what's up in north india but in south at least where i live such huge problems based on color doesn't exist evident from the fact that at present many of the main actors are not really fair (just one example). However even here fair skin obsession still exists deep inside hearts of people at least in a minor scale, as huge discrmination on colour in various fields existed here even a decade ago.

Fair skin in any race has always been more prized. India has a terrible vitamin D deficiency problem too as ppl, especially women keep their skin covered for fear of darkening it.

Trying to blame this on the British is ridiculous. The Mughals were Persians, the royal court ladies you see in paintings are very fair. It's sadly a global thing. Genghis Khan took the fairest women from the whole empire back to Mongolia.

Colourful skin is beautiful.... Brown skin specially beautiful.. Why wasting money time and expose our ski. To toxins which causes skin cancer....

Still the actress can’t deny the truth. What she wanted to hear was praise for her talent and not because of her looks or complexion. It might be unfair to her but it’s already unfair to so many talented women who don’t get a chance because of their dark complexion 🤷‍♀️ I know she tried to deny that she’s fair, but she knows the truth god damn well.

Being Chinese, and a girl, I am so related to this doing everything just trying to be more fair skin. The only thing that East Asian hates more than being tanned is being fat.

It's important to highlight these issues, but honestly colorism is an issue in the West too. How many dark-skinned African-American actors are famous or popular? General society might be more accepting of variations in color, but the entertainment industry definitely isn't.

It's kind of sad and shameful that vice is painting a negative picture of this instead of viewing this issue impartially. This is literally like any other crazy plastic surgery or beauty ideal in the west, except this is the beauty ideal in Asia. The west wants big lips, asses and perfect teeth. They want this. It has nothing to do with White Supremacy, but rather pre-colonial notions of beauty that have always been present in tropical and subtropical climates where lighter skin is rarer thus more "prized", and associated with higher status.
