NoA counting USA but not Lost Levels makes sense to me. I played Mario 1 and Mario USA on my NES at home ever since I was old enough to push buttons on a controller, but I didn't know The Lost Levels even existed until I was a teenager and the internet was more of a thing.

You underestimate your ability to make fascinating documentaries about games, I am far from a hardcore anything gamer (except pokemon snap) and this was an amazing watch. I just wish you were a bit more specific and didn't skip over things because you assumed the only people watching would be a specific group of hardcore Mario gamers

Super Mario Run is a "mobile" game... By that I mean that it is a game used to be entertaining while you wait for something else to happen. It is generally very simple and easy games made so you can just have something to do. While games like Mario Land could be said to be complete games because they're a unique experience by themselves

Think of it like: There are games for phones that are real games because they have complex mechanics and reasoning for you to go in depth on them and have a unique experience. I'd say that something like MCPE, even the old ones, are games, but Tetris, while having its complex mechanics and all, they're mostly if you want to minmax the shit out of it, besides the potential, Tetris is more of a play and relax kind of game, much more than a experience something kind of game...

I guess I'd need a better definition, but yeah

While i for the most part think none of the clear spinoffs should count as mainline mario games, i fully consider mario maker 1/2 and would argue for super paper mario (not the rest of the paper mario games). My argument for super paper mairo is that it not only has super in the title, but literally is a 2d platformer just like the majority of mainline mario games.

Yoshi has it's own franchise and in Smash Ultimate, the Yoshi's Island stage is actually cataloged under the yoshi series NOT the Super Mario series. You can tell every stage has an Icon on it that signifies what series its from. And how do I know the intention is to signify Series and not Character themed stages? Music. In the music library of Smash Ult. All songs are separate literally by "series" and yoshi has his own series tab in that music library with Yoshi's island theme in that music series as well.

That comment at the end about a future game being "the first truly unambiguous entry into the Super Mario since 1990" could genuinely apply to Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Think about it, it should meet the criteria all three unambiguous titles do.
- A game with Super Mario in the title
- A fully original game
- A 2D Mario game without the "New" moniker
- Mario is the main player character
It's possible that it falls into a middle zone like Sonic Mania where it's status as a 2D game in a largely 3D series at this point discludes it in some peoples minds but I'd think itd be fun to have a game basically everyone agrees is a mainline game again.

At the top of the family tree is mario, the character. If its got mario its a mario game.

One of those games starts the branch of super mario stories.

If it has an 'adventure' story after super mario 1 (no matter how thin) and mario is a major character than it is a super mario game. The differing genres of games are branches of the super mario series. Games where mario isnt a major character are spinoffs and not part of the super mario series. (But games like Yoshis Island can be part of more than 1 series). All iterations/versions, no matter how simiar they are, are included as their own entry in the super mario series.

Games that dont have an adventure story exist along side the super mario series but are not part of it.

There are 8 games.

SMB 1, 2 (or lost levels, depending on how you view it (although, considering how much "USA" brought to the series even if it's through happenstance, it's part of the series in my book, the characterisation of controls, the enemies, keys, picking things up, etc)) and 3, World, 64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1, and Odyssey.

The other examples such as Land, NSMB, 3D Land/World are like second tier. They're very close to being mainline games, but IMO, they're still spin-offs. The mainline games to me are ones on the latest console that push forward in some way without feeling like a side-step or reflecting on the past. As unique as the Land games are, they're a side step in my eyes. NSMB is just "member 2D Mario? I member" and the 3D Land/World games are also sidesteps. I understand not including SMG2 because it was basically going to be DLC for SMG1, but it became it's own game. But in a way, by my own definition of "not a sidestep", I should exclude it also. Literally every other Mario game is OBVIOUSLY a spin-off. How people could suggest that Mario Kart or Party are mainline games is beyond me. Might as well include Mario Golf, Tennis, and Yoshi's cookie.

Saying that the 3D Mario games are a different series is like saying that Zelda is split into 2 series since OoT. But unlike Mario, Zelda doesn't have over 200 games as a franchise, so exceptions don't have to get made. But I still think it's weird that people would consider the 3D and 2D Mario games to be different series. They play very differently in a lot of ways, but that doesn't mean they're not still the same series.

Yoshi's Island is an interesting one, in a way, it's a Yoshi game, not a Mario game. But in other ways it's literally called "Super Mario World 2", it also very much a side-step though, so by my own definition, it's out.

I think the entire problem with this video and the survey it was based on is that you never actually defined any parameters, and that you never seemingly asked for anyone else's parameters. Asking a bevy of anonymous people whether they think a large set of disparate games are contained within an undefined set is going to yield what I would describe as "useless data". You can draw some conclusions from that data set, but it's not going to be very useful. You'd be much better off starting by asking a large group what defines a mario game. Like, I can see people distinguishing between 2D and 3D for a start, but I would argue both styles are Mario games. And based on my definition other people would have to agree. You have to argue definitions, not inclusion based on lack thereof.

I'm incredibly confused by how the first three games in the series (that aren't a reskin of a completely different game) don't have a 100% response rate for "yes, this is a Super Mario game". That is baffling.

this exact debate goes on often in the Sonic series too, possibly most contentious is Shadow the Hedgehog "it's not a Sonic game, it's a Shadow game" identical to the Wario Land dilemma at first, but in contrast to that situation, I argue that Shadow the Hedgehog is among SEGA's flagship products of the year and developed by the core Sonic Team and clearly iterates from Sonic Heroes, while Wario Land, still having platformer features, has more of a bespoke control scheme and game design concept (remember, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 both had guns, although not extended use of realistic firearms), and I would certainly say New Super Luigi U is a Super Mario game on a similar basis

Run is far more comparable to mainline 2D Mario than you act like it is, and honestly almost incomparable to games like Temple Run, Subway Surfers, etc. The only major fundamental gameplay difference between Run and other 2D Mario's is that you run automatically - that's it. There's still precision platforming, collectables, enemies, and a clear end goal.

And vice versa, the only similarity to games like Temple Run or Subway Surfers is that you run automatically. Other than that, they play NOTHING alike.

I'm from the future and Super Mario Bros Wonder is coming next month and I'll be curious to see if it is actually controversial or if it's generally accepted to be part of the Super Mario series. I don't see why it shouldn't be accepted, it is very much a Super Mario game and doesn't have any of the characteristics that usually cause a game to be controversial (it's made by Nintendo, headed by Mario, not a weird edge case, not a direct or implied sequel to an existing game, it's on a home console, it's a 2D platformer, etc).

I personally think that there is no good reason to not include Bowser's fury in the main series. The fact that it's not available separately is irrelevant in my opinion. It's a point about games availability and has nothing to do with the game itself. Bowser's fury is far too big to be called just a mode. The game design is unique and it's structurally independent. It has its own credits. The only decent counterargument would be about its length, but I think it is indeed long enough to not get reduced to just a "huge structurally independence game mode with unique design and mainline polish".
