TheFatRat - Hunger [Chapter 2]

During the development of the artwork for this song we googled for children living in trash mountains. But instead of the drawings and concept artworks we expected, we saw pictures of actual children living in these conditions. We were shocked and decided that we want to help. Therefor I’m happy to announce that all revenue from my new song „Hunger“ will help children and their families in Manila.

So I've listened to this song multiple times now, but never really looked at the lyrics before...

It wasn't until just now when I thought to myself "I'll read along as I listen" and realised I had got part of it totally wrong...

The "come closer, come closer etc" part at the end, I always thought said "I'm complicit, I'm complicit, etc"

I have no idea why I thought it, and it's not like it would make a ton of sense if it was that but that's what I always heard...

Even knowing what it's meant to be I can't hear it saying "come closer".. Oh well

The night was seemed to be almost still, the only sound coming from the loud clanks as the garbage bots patrolled the endless sea of trash mountains. Xyla stood steady and cautious, her stern gaze keeping a watchful eye through the fog as the search lights swiftly moved upon the pile. This was a huge risk for them, and Xyla would die before she let James fall into the claws of the Zev Mordemus.

"How much longer? The bots are going to sweep around here soon." The young impatient warrior asked out loud, her gaze still focused on the bright beams ahead.

"I'm getting there" the younger sibling responded while keeping his eyes on the map "It takes time".

Xyla shifted her eyes to her kneeling brother, her voice growing more agitated. "We don't have time, James. The longer we stay the higher the risk of getting caught, and the more likely the council finds the hideout".

Despite his sisters' valid warnings, James kept his pace and responded in a sing-along tone, "And it won't go any faster if you keep distracting me."

The older sibling, knowing this to be true, simply scoffed and un-folded her arms. As she did, a sharp pain coursed through her body from her right shoulder. Xyla hissed before grasping it softly; she could feel the blood from the gash through the bandage wrapping. The young warrior chuckled lightly; 'Don't worry Mave' Xyla thought to herself as she remembered the street fight with the dangerous Zevguard 'You'll get that second round soon enough...and I'll pay this back in full'.

The older sibling continued to stay alert in the background as the younger brother continued to study the map, the floating lantern above occasionally flickering as James moved the viewring. Even with his uncanny ability to read the mythok language and his truesight eyes, the dialect on the map was very difficult to understand and connect. Nonetheless, James continued to patiently look over the fading model, golden lines and faded blue letters revealing themselves through the ring in a pattern the young prodigy couldn't yet decipher. James recalled the first time he had activated his truesight in front of his mother; he'd always remember the how her face went from shock, to utter horror, to re-assuring and calming so quickly. "Don't be afraid of your gifts" she had told him while holding his hand softly "Your father had the same abilities you did, and look how much good he had done for our city. You have the power to change to course of history; I know you will make the most of it when the time comes". James frowned as he remembered the last time he had seen his mom, her waving goodbye as he and Xyla went off to school with that radiant smile of hers; when they got home, all he had seen was flames.

"I'm so sorry mama." James whispered as his eyes welled up, a single tear dropping from his now-closed eyelids. The tear splashed onto the map through the viewring; a few seconds later, the whole map began to mysteriously glow. A surprised James leaned back from the map as it and the viewring began to float into the air, catching the eyes of Xyla as she watched curiously. Glowing ancient letters began to float of the map and circle around the viewring as the three glowing orange lines slanted up from the model to connect to the floating device. James noticed a faint charging sound coming from the ring before, suddenly, a beam of golden light shot straight out of the viewring, the two siblings looking on in awe as the beam seemed to pierce the clouds as disperse the thick fog. Xyla quickly snapped out of her trance and instantly looked forward to the trashyard beyond only to see several spotlights staring right at them. Xyla closed her fists, her gloves charging with purlescent energy as a thunderous alarm sounded from each of the now converging bots. She stifled a laugh.

"Well, that's one way to get caught" Xyla remarked before getting serious and looking towards James "We need to move now. You got the ring James?...James?".

James didn't respond, all outside sounds fading into obscurity as he stayed trasnfixed by the beam. As he stared awe-struck into the golden light, sudden images began to flash through his head:

A long, shadowed object sitting on top a hill with some sort of colorful dome in the back.
A storming tower surrounded by void.
A small box with mythok symbols.
And a tall, dark-haired figure looking out into a giant stream of glowing strings before looking over his shoulder with a slight smirk.

"Daddy?"

The beam suddenly disappeared, leaving a giant hole in the sky as the map and viewring floated back down on to the table. James remained silent and still before being softly shaken out of it by an uneasy Xyla. "James," the sister said hastly "James, we've got to get out of here-". Xyla stopped as she looked at her brother's dazed face, her face instantly softening. Kneeling down, Xyla turned James to face her before asking worriedly, "What's wrong? What did you see?". James, now tearing up again, could only look into his sister's eyes and barely utter as single word:

"Dad"
