Much love to you for making this series! I’ve never been super huge on MegaMan but I played all three of the games in these series and absolutely LOVED it and think back on it fondly… the reviews on these games were painful when I enjoyed each game so much.

These games were hard for me but I absolutely loved them. They were my Pokemon. Thanks for sharing about the DX patch, didn't know about that. Maybe I'm due for a replay

I didn't know about Battle Networks when I first bought these. I was a kid with very limited access to internet in the boonies of Finland and 95% of the games never arrived here. But even back then despite having relatively good time, I got the feeling that these games were made to cash in nostalgia towards some past Megaman series on past Nintendo home consoles. Or half-assed attempt to branch out a series I only knew as 2D platformer at that point. That era of DS was full of attempts to create spin-offs of the popular home console franchises and every game also had to some kind of tech demo was DS features. There were some classics born from that like Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow but also so much janky and soulless garbage. This didn't feel exactly like the latter but the signs pointed more towards that than something made with passion. And I was a kid who happily played Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly and only found it disappointing due to how short it was so if I sensed something was wrong, the flags were bright red.

What I'm trying to say is that I'm not surprised that critics went in expecting cash grab and got whiff of cash grab and just instantly wrote the entire game off, especially considering it had the nerve to one-up even Pokemon by selling 3 practically identical versions at the same time.

While I'll still ultimately always prefer the battle system from Battle Network, I love just about everything else from Star Force more.

Like on the whole, SF's story blows most of the BN ones out of the water. It's so much more consistently personal, and does a really good job developing over the course of the game. Even if it's not groundbreaking, the conceit with the FMians connecting with people at their lowest was brilliant.

Being a battle network suprr fan the mazes temp the hell out of me but those battles just.... well they look terrible.

I think the fact they just threw away all the PETs might be why I hated these games as a kid.

Felt like it was really cruel to just throw them away like that, leaving Navis to become background programs.

If I'm being completely honest I love Battle Network to death, but I actually love Star Force even more! It took everything I loved about BN and just elevated it imo. Better combat, better sound, writing and characters. With the pinnacle being Star Force 3. Now that we have the Battle Network collection I'm hoping Capcom will eventually give us a Star Force collection.

With how the MegaMan Battle Network franchise was able to get a Legacy Collection released on multiple consoles, this does make me wonder if Star Force will receive a Legacy Collection as well.

i’m gonna be attempting to m*d my 3ds to play the old star force games next weekend, i have such a nostalgia for these games

my first ever MegaMan game was actually Star Force Leo. i remember playing through it many, many times. usually I'd play to the point of having completed almost all of the postgame, minus the more difficult version of the final boss because i usually struggled a lot as it was with the original version of the final boss.

How do you lock on?

I absolutely despised the battle mechanics of StarForce. Also the 3d graphics were so bad it was gross.

I remember playing this. I think I had been enjoying the battle network games for some time and hadn't played one in years. Then one day I was in my local video game store and came across this, back then I really only had game magazines for information as I didn't have access to the internet. So I was so happy. The final boss took some time though. I would be interested in replaying these so the DX patch might be the way forward.

Punching the little ducks that shoot them at you? Would have been more fitting if it were geese. Geese are just enough of a dick to do something like that.

The one thing I like about SF1 is how all the story bosses have aspects or pieces of Geo's character that are visibly displayed throughout the series:

Bud's fear of losing a connection with Prez alludes to Geos fear to form relationships

Dubious's paranoia that someone will betray him reflects Geo's distrust for people.

Sonia's grief on her parent is similar to Geo's grief with Kelvin.

Shepar's imbalance on school and his family is similar to Geo's decisions and worries over seeing his weakness of his strengths.

The Prez's anger towards her parents' treatment to make her into their doll is Geo's dislike for being forced to do things against his will.

Pat and Rey's kindness and ruthlessness and most of all background reflects on Geo's disdain and appreciation for forming relationships.

And Lastly, Cepheus' apathy and distrust in his own people is similar to Dubious' which Geo's again distrust for people.

It's really amazing how they tie all the foes he's fought to give him a a very violent reflection.

Star Force is so trash. The main character is so boring and whiny. The battle system was so badly dumbed down and weak.

Really SF1 was launched in a time where Megaman was oversaturated, critics were mean of this game, but one thing was true, put 3 games as the exact same game with minor differences was to much, not even Pokemon was that greedy, because a third version was like the definitive version, but in this case is the exact same game.

I adored the first couple Battle Network games on the GBA, but since the Star Force games were released around the same time that I was in my edgy teen phase I never played them back then - I believe I was enough of an idiot those days to sling around the term "kiddie game" and the like.
I've heard very mixed things on the SF games since, but I'd be interested in an eventual Star Force collection for sure, that era of Capcom is a bit of a blind spot for me.

Star Force is special to me. While I had played and enjoyed BN starting with 6 when it first dropped and worked my way backwards to 3, I never really cared all that much about Lan. As mentioned in the video, Star Force 1 really stood out to me because of its story and Geo by extension. Geo being a softspoken, introverted kid who I could easily relate to, who gradually matured into the hero he is over the course of the game was such a great example of character development. I lost my DS shortly after I beat Star Force sadly, so I never got to play 2 and 3

So basically StarForce is the X for battle network very interesting

Great review. The gameplay might be a downgrade but Megaman Starforce 1’s story and character writing completely blew most if not all Battle Network games out of the water (BN3 comes close). Every single villain or character in this game is human or sympathetic in some way. Gone are the moustache-twirling villains from WWW or Gospel who want to destroy/take over the world for no discernible reason beyond being evil. The final antagonist of Starforce 1 is more sympathetic than the antagonists of like 3 BN games combined. The dialogue is very well written, and some of the themes and conflicts presented are unexpectedly mature and heart-wrenching for a kids game. Overall, an unexpected favorite for me from a franchise that is not usually known for compelling character writing outside of a few games like the Zero series or BN3.

The touch screen parts are way better on the ds lite and dsi

It is a crime that Starforce got negative reviews from people who don't even know what they dislike about it. I now see it was a miracle it even had 3 games at the time, and I am glad it did

I love MMSF so much and Pegasus was my first DS game ever!! No regrets because when I grabbed it my kid brain thought it was pokemon XD

It's actually pretty good megaman games and the plot is way more mature than your typical megaman games because it's 10 years old recovering from depression and grow up as a better person.

Loved the MMBN series, blue moon being my first game in the series, and I’ve played all of them since. This series was way underrated. They had their issues, and the god forsaken fetch quests, but they were fun and a great spin!

Easy to say this game left a huge mark in my childhood....

I adored this game as a child, along with ZX, this was my introduction to the Megaman series. It defenitely was challenging to me back then, I knew nothing about RPGs so I reached the final boss very underleveled with a trash deck, I jumped in happiness when I beat it after the 70th run.
