The ultimate wood stove is in a aircraft hanger in Fairbanks Alaska. Takes ten foot logs burns for a week.

Back in the 70s a friend of mine had one of these in his living room. That was in the days of the hippies. There were a lot of inconvenient things happening in those days. The worst part was the lack of bathing and washing clothing.

This is awesome this is great, i have seen some of these videos of new wood stove ideas, and pool heaters using wood fuel, i think work great to have some heat exchagers about exactly like a car radiators on the wood stove red hot on top of the flames, then the air heat or pool water heat can drawl all of that temperature out of the stove, and can use heat exchangers like a car radators on the way up the chmeny something to catch the heat and can use fans on the red hot car radiators, would gain 100x more heat from the wood stove would probably run into the problem of becoming way too hot in the garage or even huge shop.

My advise... put those 8×12 concrete stepping stones in the stove. Two in the middle two on the right and left. And below the vent on the front drill a 1" hole for more air flow and bolt a piece of tin on to shut it . Mines lasted a long time. 2016 I built it now its Jan 2024 still has alot of life left. You change out those stepping stones every two yrs but there cheap.

Not quite the super heater... yet. I've made two of these before & you need to update your design if you need/want more heat. Simple to do just a little rework.

Just put the entire stove together first with all the clean shiny paint on it, then take it outside and build good hot fire in it to burn off all the paint. That way you don't have to deal with all the black soot while you are working on the stove construction like this guy did. Keep a small grinder handy to smooth out all the sharp edges so you don't get cut and be sure to always wear some good gloves.

Still could’ve plumbed in radiant floors and used the wood burning as the heat for them. Just gotta have a heat exchanger made up. There’s a guy here in Monroe Michigan that uses such a set up and it even keeps part of the driveway clear so he doesn’t have to shovel or salt near his Barn

hey dude, it's been two years since you built this stove. time to take it apart and clean the creosote out of the inside. this kind of design looks like it turns into a fire hazard with time and use. be safe. CSL is a product you can use to loosen the creosote. need to physically scrape if off to be fire safe.

These are awesome. I inherited one like it with the house I bought last year. HUGE NOTE need to make at least 3 feet air space around the stove. I say this because I nearly caught the entire shop on fire because these will burn very hot and I had stacked very seasoned wood about 2 feet away and it spontaneously ignited! I was not in the shop and just happened to walk back out and found the pieces of wood on fire just another few feet from my cars!

I was also burning some junk wood from old pallets at the time which burned super hot.

Just my .02 hope someone else does not have same problem. These are great and make a lot of heat.

I built the same one but single barrel..... i also cut it down a bit to fit into my fireplace...(about 25in in length.) Welded it back up an sealed it with furnace cement. Keeps my entire first floor a nice 70-75 during winter months. have it hooked up to my steel chimney sleeve to allow all the smoke to go out. saves me so much money, fire wood is basically given away in my area! i saved about 2k last year in oil. this year should be the same.

Gary here from the UK, as one plumber to another sweet project have you thought about adding angled Finns to the unit, I think it will add more surface area to the unit thus giving you more heat for wood brunt just like radiators plus baffles inside the barrels to slow the heat down and give more heat into the barrels and you might think about adding a coating or sand on the burn barrel only half way up on the inside to make the barrel last longer .I hope you think these ideas are useful.
Very nice video very interesting and informative keep them coming thank you

I'm going to try and watch. These are illegal, in several places, for a reason. Look at a burn barrel. Ten uses and burned or rusted thru. Check your home owners policy. Guaranteed nogo. Same with your insurance.
And I do have first hand use knowledge. I'd show you the burned up shop. If I had the pics.

They are a lot better when you offset the top flue pipe on the front above the door then angle the flu open out in whatever direction you need to. More smoke in the top barrel for a longer amount of time is always better 🍻🍻

I can't imagine that the upper barrel contributes significantly to better efficiency. Ok, more surface area = more heat release.
But it would be more effective if you opened the upper barrel, inserted grates on several levels and placed stones on the grates, which would then be heated up and able to give off the heat again over a longer period of time.
Or: Run water pipes through the upper barrel. Add a pump, an expansion tank and a radiator and you can distribute the heat better throughout the hall or heat an office in or next to the hall.

If ya did it with 55gal drums, it just plain will not work for crap. You need a 30 and a 15 gal barrel they work great with a very good draft, 55 gal barrels NOT ! DON'T WAIST YOUR TIME ON 55 GAL BARRELS !
