It is true that Police car can ignore red light when dealing emergency, only if it safe to do, meaning theres no vehicle on the other roads of intersection where the light is green.

The people who say it’s the cop’s fault for running the red light, should know that any emergency vehicles that are on are allowed to break any traffic rules and other drivers should slow and stop regardless of who gets the right of way or who gets to pass based on the driving rules.

And to the people who say that it’s the cop’s fault for not checking the intersection should know that emergency vehicles do check the intersection by SLOWLY passing into the intersection if it’s nearly empty(as this cop did) not necessarily a semi-stop & checking because the two cars who have passed are far ahead of the pickup truck so the cop had enough time to pass as it took a few seconds for the hit to happen and emergency vehicles have sirens for a reason to make other drivers aware of incoming emergency vehicles and the pick up truck should have heard it and could have been more aware of it because if you hear any emergency vehicles you should also be more cautious to slow down just in case

My first thought was because he was trying to stop the pickup that they had otherwise been unable to stop.

The cop put his lights, and sirens because he had to attend an emergency. The other drivers are supposed to be prepared to stop and pull aside to hel p the first responders.

Cops have to use what’s called due regard when running code and approaching intersections. More context is needed such as sound. The cop is suppose to cycle there sirens slow down and look before proceeding. If he did this and the truck still proceeded the pick up truck driver could be held liable. If the police officer didn’t use due regard when approaching this intersection he is liable.
