What nobody can make me understand is why all these problems are acceptable on a computer that cost more than twice that of an equivalent Windows computer. If I'm going to pay that much for a computer, it better be damn near perfect; both hardware, and software.

I had to switch to Macs a decade ago after over two decades with Windows. Still drives me bonkers just how stupid some things are. It turns into a real nightmare with multiple screens. I have no idea why they're using the same logic from almost 50 years ago when running multiple screens with multiple apps was not even on the horizon. There's nothing wrong with moving forward with times without admitting any wrongdoing, but Apple is a sadistic ego-maniac.

Windows key + arrow key alone is the reason why MAC is not the way to go.

About the issue with the dock. You can right click on the Icon, for example Firefox and it will show you the opened windows and you can select them by clicking on them. Other then that you can use the Mission Control.

there’s a way of displaying all apps open and one to display all currently open windows of one app. it’s gestures on the trackpad or active corners. you gotta set them up though. you google, ask mac users who dont know shit… but god forbid you play with the settings and find out uh?

Remove all the fixed applications at the bottom, then when you open one, it will show up after the „|“. And when you close the application, it disappears. It‘s then a little bit more similiar to Windows

I’ve mainly used macOS for years - but have used Windows at work and with Bootcamp as well. I find the default macOS experience VERY mediocre. As he says in the video, fine for casuel users, but also lacking. However, when you start customising, it gets extremely powerful. And that leads me to what I miss the most about Windows: The (indie) third party app eco-system.

There are some utilities here and there for Windows - and they’re usually free. For some, that might be a good thing. But you just don’t get the same level of polish and functionality as when an app is someone’s entire livelihood. I’m talking about stuff like CleanShot X, Soulver, Drafts, Bartender, Sidenote, Paste, (Apple) Shortcuts, Rogue Amoeba-stuff, Default Folder X, etc., etc. And there’s also stuff that’s just very nice, like Things, Fantastical, Bear and Craft.

The two most important for me, though, are BetterTouchTool and Raycast. They make me fly with, respectively, the trackpad and keyboard.

So on one side, it’s poor from Apple how much is missing from the OS initially - but the ceiling in incredibly high. (And Apple DOES include things like iWork and Garageband - so there’s that.)

This reminds me of all the pain I had to go through when I switched from Android to iPhone years back. I still don't understand how come Android with Windows works OK but iOS and Windows feels like a couple going through a divorce.
I gave Apple another chance and got myself an iPad Pro and it works fine enough for me to consider getting a Macbook Air. I just hope it wouldn't annoy me as much as using an iPhone.

It seems that your problem is using software made by Adobe. They seem to randomly sometimes output a working version but mostly Adobe software is broken, no matter which year you live.

The Apple ideology is that the user adapts to the operating system, not the other way. Linux adapts to whatever you want and Windows is in the middle with more customizable features than Mac OS but way less than Linux.

I have currently 101 windows open on my Linux workstation. I can guarantee that neither Windows nor Mac OS can handle this amount of windows. And I have only one screen but 5 virtual desktops.

Google Chrome 🤣 By now you have probably realized Safari is the best web browser. For example if you use this Google Chrome on the Mac, you probably use Chrome on your iPhone or iPad. Absolutely worst browser in the world even in Googles own Pixel, Chrome sucks dude. The reader view is a damn pop-up and it works then it stops working. Google has also removed the basic features of a web browser in the past couple of years in Chrome for Android. It’s awful. Good luck getting the thing to print.

The reader view in Firefox on Android works but it’s a two step process. Also pull to refresh is broken and has been disabled in current Firefox on mobile Android.

Microsoft Edge browser on Android. Another bad browser. You do a search in Google and this browser seems fast but notice all links are showing visited link color. Microsoft Edge has downloaded every freaking page in the search list!

Safari has become the best web browser on the planet. All browsers on the iPhone and iPad uses Apples WebKit, so on these devices especially you should probably use Safari anyway.

As a prospective mac user, I really appreciate this series. Though my main use case won't so much be video editing but coding and and some design work, this definitely brings some perspective to the ecosystem hailed to have the best laptops on the market. I'm not entirely too bothered by mac doing things in different ways from windows. Coming from having experience in using linux systems I think I'll be quite familiar with a mac. However, the biggest thing that got me while watching your vids is defintely the issue with the dock and also the file transfer not showing any details. I am honestly quite appalled that mac doesn't have something in place for what I'd consider a fundamental feature for modern OSs.

That being said, I'm still very excited to get my hands on a new mac. The biggest driving point for me is the fact that I'll be able to use my design software alongside having a bash terminal natively for my programming. Something that would drive me nuts when on windows or on a linux machine is how you cannot have both worlds natively on your pc. For bash you have to either install wsl, or some 3rd party terminals like cygwin or git bash which are not as intergrated in the system as simply having them natively like in linux. Similarly, with linux, you have to hop through some hoops as well if you even hope to run software like the Affinity design suite or Clip Studio paint. At the very least, with a macbook I'll be able to easily access my design software tools that I want to use more regularly, along with my wacom tablet, all while also being able to do my work and having the best experience and speed when compiling my code. That and of course the insane battery life are the main driving points for a mac for me. The other features that come with the mac are of course nice bonues, but I'm glad to have been exposed to some issues I will likely encounter coming from windows and linux.

I wish more people would make videos to show the differences between the operating systems and expose more of apple's shortcomings so that people considering a switchover can do so with realistic expectations.

How to disable notification from ejecting external hardware

Copy/paste in terminal

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.DiskArbitration.diskarbitrationd.plist DADisableEjectNotification -bool YES && sudo pkill diskarbitrationd

This creates a .plist in system preferences. You do need to reboot your computer for full effect.

If you don't want it anymore, just go to its path and remove the .plist

It's interesting the different design and functional choices present between the systems.....Macs definitely get you thinking and working in a different mode. While I've only ever used one in school, I wouldn't mind trying one out for design and development work later! I'm a Windows boi for now.

i actually prefer how the icon view works when selecting, give you a lot more control and speed when selecting files. just hold shift for the windows behavior

I was a long-time Windows user and about 10 years ago I switched to Mac for work. About a year ago I switched back to Windows. Today I use both. There's things each does better. Luckily I use programs that work very well and consistently in both.

The hardest part was developing new habits when switching. The default is to try to retain all your same working habits and you'll just be disappointed. For example, OSX does multi-monitor virtual desktops really well that makes up for poor support of multiple instances of an app. Windows considers all monitors part of the same virtual desktop making the feature worthless for managing multiple instances of the same app. Instead Windows supports multiple instances right from the task bar. So in OSX I use virtual desktops and in Windows I use the task bar.

When I got an M1 Pro, my desktop could barely hold its own against the M1. A PC that can draw hundreds of Watts against the power sipping M1 with a 90W power supply.

In the end, I like Windows better. But I cheat and Remote SSH into the M1 from my desktop. I like unix better for command line and remote SSH into the M1 is faster than WSL2. Plus all my work is already on the M1 when I need to be mobile.

One thing that drives me crazy with OSX is you basically have to pay money for the simplest productivity software. OSX lacked native simple window management for a long time (you could only resize from the bottom right corner) and even the most basic window manager everyone uses costs $10 extra. In Windows, you can get almost anything you want from PowerTools, registry changes, or simple free programs. I can change almost anything in Windows via a registry edit. I can't even get rid of the huge rounded corners in OSX.
