Spawn (1997) - Final Fight Scene in Hell

This scene of Hell actually doesn't look that bad in my opinion, Not the best CGI though But still looks good for what they gave us especially back in the 90s

If anyone's curious about why this looks so awful while the rest of the movie (especially Violator) looks so much better: the studio saw a rough cut of the movie and decided they were going to have an even bigger hit on their hands than they'd first thought, so they gave the team a little bit more money for extra VFX shots. This sometimes worked, like paying ILM $40k for an extra Spawn cape shot, but then there's this, where New Line told them to change the dinky little fight in the basement into a full-fledged war in Hell... but didn't give them any extra time to do it.

So all that money got thrown at a glorified television VFX company that was originally just supposed to be doing scene transitions and computer screens for the movie, but was the only company available on such short notice. And it wasn't just new effects that had to be done, too, stuff that was already done for the Hell sequences (like Malebolgia's puppet) had to be replaced with new CGI to all match together and those redos meant even less money and time to do this scene. They pretty much had to make up the new ending on the fly while shooting & editing, and the end result of the studio's "help" was the nightmare you just watched.

Spawn was never going to win any awards, but it probably would have done a lot better critically and financially with the original low-key ending of fighting Violator in the home and then Spawn going all Batman Begins and swooping through the shadows, taking out goons to stop the virus shipment at the docks.

The cgi was sooooooo bad I just seen this movie on tubi and saw how bad it was 😂

Spawn was a demon with a holy heart. The real world equivalent to spawn was rapper Tupac Shakur.

I honestly thought I had seen Spawn in the theatre back in High School, but in retrospect, I must have just listened to the soundtrack and watched the trailer, because I don’t remember this garbage at ALL.

Never understood what spawn was doing when he connected or did to all those other hell spawns…did he absorbs their energy? Did he kill them all? What happened? Lol

The fact that this was released the same year as Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Which also has a bad CGI, makes 1997 a pretty rough year for New Line as a whole, Aside from the fact that they also released Austin Powers the same year.

Everybody always says “Oh the CGI wasn’t good enough yet to do what they wanted for this film” but that’s not true. CGI was fine they just didn’t have the budget for it. Jurassic park came out in 93 and the cgi in it still stands up today. Maybe even is better. Same thing with Lost world and that came out the same year as Spawn did. The CGI for the Violator was not bad at all.

They need to remake this movie
