I agree with G.B.S. that it is hard to distinguish which of Dickens' works is his greatest- because the are all great. But, my personal favorite will always be the Pickwick Papers.

So, how come John continually got himself into debt? You never said why. Did he gamble?

A terrible pedestrian commentary..he simply avoids any intelligent analysis of Bleak House which is Dickens most complex and profound novel..it's all gungho! for Great Expectations as is rightly expected but his comments are really rather glib.

Great Expectations - the 1946 movie - Directed by David Lean is a masterpiece - the cast - the music - the screenplay and the masterful direction of David Lean - you can feel Charles Dickens and the time is brought to life - glad I found it on DVD .

Charles Dickens sense of compassion and honor makes him my favorite author. He cared when others did not.

That house looks anything but modest, probably set you back a cool £750k which is 3x more than the average house price in England. Not that modest.

I just watched a Walk documentary on BBC and it was based on him and his life. With an interest in writing myself and Having won The Literature price near my final year in secondary school based on some of his works, I was interested in any movie about him. Read quite a bit on Wikipedia about him, his loves, and his 10 children. (4/6/2023.) .

For me David Copperfield is his best story following him through the troubled childhood to a young adult, the personal growth along the way, the way childhood characters return later as adults and the happy ending with Agnes are so satisfying.
The Pickpapers, The Old Curosity Shop and Nicholas Nickleby have some of his funniest livelist and most imaginative characters and plots.
Hard Times, Dombey and Son, Great Expectations and Our Mutual Friend have a bleaker tone and more ambiguous characters but also some bitting satire and more troubled love stories.
A Christmas Carol is for me the most enjoyable read, short and punchy, it really drives its message home.
