Everyone had India as favourites to win the ICC ODI Final...and yet, India's vulnerabilities were there to be seen before the game. Key among them was how the balance of the team could work against them...6 specialist batters and 5 specialist bowlers. They lacked genuine all rounders! And, no team in the tournament had put them under genuine pressure. If Australia could put India's top order under pressure, their middle order was always going to lack depth...with no all rounders...leaving the tail exposed. It was a train wreck waiting to happen. All that was needed was a team that could put them under pressure...and enter Australia, a gritty, well-prepared team with lots of bowling depth, and batters down to # 10. This final was lost well before it was played. Australia's strategy of player development, developing all rounders, stability in selection, and a strong emphasis on high quality fielding just needed to be given enough time to aggregate into competitive advantage which was on display on Sunday night. Australia are World Champions again...but not by mistake!
