In the movie "There Be Dragons" Wes Bentley's character Manolo uses a Mauser C96 Red 9 throughout several scenes taking place during the Spanish Civil War.

Fun fact: The C96 used in the Warlord era, the C96s were not really a german, they were a spanish copies of the c96, if you are struggling with the difference, the german mauser has only a semi-auto, while the spanish copies were with a semi and full-auto. Cool, huh?

Having shot an authentic red 9, I can tell you it's surprisingly ergonomic.

It is a a great pistol. With the att stock it passed as a carbine. China could not get fifles due to an arms embargo.

Two more movies for the list: In Thomas Vinterberg's "Dear Wendy" from 2005 Mark Webber makes use of the C96's excellent long range performance to take out a sniper. And in Milcho Manchevski's "Dust" from 2001 both antagonists use C96s - as a contrast to the protaginist's six-shooter.

It's a shame that Hellsing Ultimate didn't make the list

You need to check out the Indian Movie Hey Ram (2000). Anyone who watched that movie will never forget the Mauser C96. I literally searched for the Hey Ram gun when I didn't know its name. In the movie its been shown as a symbol of manliness, lust, revenge and Nazi ideology.

So, fun fact about the chinese clones of the c96.

They were often chambered in .45, which made them a lot stronger and a lot less controllable than their German counterpart. It worked in its favour, however. The Chinese warlords of the era developed a technique called "bandit shooting" where they would hold the gun sideways gangsta-style and spray, letting the recoil carry the gun horizontally instead of vertically. This technique is seen in MGS 3 when Eva shoots her C96 from her bike.

The Fiochi 7.63mm ammunition gave huge whitish, lightning-colored fireballs when fired out the one I once had.

They’re nowhere near as awkward to handles as they look to be - they’re a bit muzzle-heavy, which can help a less-steady aim. They have a good long sight radius, which also helps.

It was used by the bad guys in The Man From Uncle series where tv movies were often 3 episodes stitched together Like The Helicopter Spies, they put a large round scop the size of a small plate on top and stocks to give it a futuristic look which despite being such an old gun it lent itself to.

The original chambering for the C96 is one of the best cartridges for any game animal smaller than a deer. Flat, fast, packs a wallop but wont make holes that destroy meat.

Worth saying the C96 shown in Massacre of Rome was a real variant that had an elongated magazine to allow a 20 round capacity however it wasn’t well received give Artillery Luger had its 32 round snail drum magazine which was a hell of a lot easier to load than two stripper clips.

My husband is going nuts his Uncle past away 2 years ago and now his personel boxes are coming from South Africa to the USA. Box number 5 has a fully functional C96 Mauser captured during the Rhodesian bush war. My husband’s heritage has many firearms last year his great grandfather’s Martini Henry entered our collection and after that a webley.

Wasn’t Mauser a German company? Why didn’t the German army only adopt it in 1916?

There was a variant of the C96 that could be easily switched between auto-fire and single-shot. However, auto-fire mode made it impossible to aim after the first 3-4 rounds as the recoil inevitably pushed the weapon up. It could only be fired effectively in auto-fire mode with the wooden stock attached.

Great video. My C-96 is chambered in 9mm, but no Red-9 stocks. Note that the 4-inch barrel version was sold to Russia in large numbers, where it was called the "Bolo," short (ha ha) for Bolshevik. My personal C-96 cost almost 4 grand in 2015 (?) from Simpson's, but it is worth it; the tempered parts are still heat-blued, the innards are pristine, and the exterior is very good. The excellent bore makes it an accurate shooter. It is not as cumbersome as you would think, a .357 mag. revolver is more front-heavy. --Old Guy
