B. Write major and minor supporting sentences

Major Support:
• “Teens who abuse drugs have lower grades, are absent from school more often, and have a higher school drop- out rate” (Bugbee et al., 2019; Arria & Du Pont, 2022).
• Further, statistics on studies related to marijuana use, support that “24% of U. S. high school students with mostly A’s, had used marijuana one or more times during their life, compared to 66% of students with mostly D/F’s” (CDC, 2017).

(Statistics in the form of a quotation is used as evidence).
(2) Topic sentence: Over a time, drug use can cause a person to become psychologically dependent as the drugs gain a powerful control over one’s life, and the person becomes an addict.

• Major support: Further, “the misuse of over-the-counter medications is also common among teens because they are easily accessible and have mood-altering abilities” (Sandstone, 2022).
• Major support: When the user becomes addicted, the user may gravitate to other drugs, such as cocaine, amphetamine, club drugs, heroin and hallucinogens, all in an effort to maintain the high.
• Conclusion: Many teenagers feel these drugs are ‘cool’ and help them to win approval of their peers.
(3) Topic sentence: However, the research shows that what begins as excitement and using one drug, could also lead to serious health consequences including overdose and death.
Major support:
• Continued substance abuse can cause brain damage and can affect major organs like the liver, heart, and lungs, and can even lead to death.
Minor support in which an example is used:
• The mother of two brothers who died of heroin overdose said, “her sons were not bad kids they were sick kids trying to get well and the system failed them” (Wiedemann, 2016).
• Major support: However, programs like ‘Safety First,” that focus on educating kids about the dangers of substance abuse seem to have more promise.
