Imagine I told you we’re going to play a game. Now, I’m going to pay you to play. I’m an expert at this game. I’ve played it hundreds, maybe thousands of times. I make all the rules. I’m going to teach you some of the rules. Some of the rules you’ll be able to find and uncover along the way. Ready to play? Oh, and by the way I can change the rules at any time.
As a manager, your relationships with your staff are important. I would argue it’s possibly the most important aspect of your work. Part of establishing and bolstering relationships is understanding how the other person feels.
Hearing the structure of the game and how it will be played, how do you feel? What’s the objective or goal of most games? Ultimately, to win. Given how this game is to be played, how do you feel about winning? I’m pretty sure I’m going to lose. Yep, that’s how your employees feel, over and over again. It can feel like an impossible game they can’t win. Now, there are employees who do everything that is asked of them successfully and they’re winning every time. But imagine if you are not that person who is winning every time. How does that feel? I’m just losing. I’m not a good employee. I’m not valued for the things I’m doing right.
Now taking the game analogy a step further, I as the manager or executive, or business owner, make all the rules, know all the rules, and decide whether you win or lose, I hypothetically hold all the cards. What cards does the employee hold? To quiet quit, to rebel, To quit, to fold, to chose whether or not to play the game.
You see this across industries and roles, the one real card employee’s have is quitting or threatening to quit, you see this in the great resignation and quiet quitting.
If the pay is comparable to other places, then what’s the motivation to work there? If I’m only going to continue to lose, I’m better off finding a place where I may actually win, or that may pay me more to lose, or that maybe I don’t feel as much as a loser.
Ensure your staff feel they are winning or capable of winning.
