Just an FYI these are used more in Sri Lankan cooking and grows like crazy in Sri Lanka! Especially since Sri Lankan’s use whole spices and leaves and use it in our tempering process for a lot of curries!

Dude seems well-versed in plant cultivation but may not be as familiar with curries. It's worth noting that the plant is named the curry leaf plant because its leaves are commonly used in various Indian side dishes (curries), not the reverse. Stop making inaccurate assumptions and misleading people about indian food. Get your facts right!

You have a bit of mis-information here. The yellow color people associate with curries (and curry powder) comes from the liberal use of Turmeric. These curry leaves would not impart any color unless you used waaay too many, and blended them to a paste first (which I cannot imagine doing). The leaves are usually added to hot oil or ghee along with spices as part of a final tempering step.

Hmm. I don't find curry trees easy to grow. They seem finicky about humidity and light. I had one that was happy on the east coast but it was too dry for it in California and it died! I have a new one that's growing well but we had an adjustment period. It seems very strongly to prefer dappled sun, not full. The leaves were getting burned in full sun and it didn't grow until it had partial shade. Now it's thriving. It likes a little wood ash in its water too.

I'm not Indian, but I'm pretty sure curry means a "blend", which was made into a thing when British soldiers asked street vendors to whip something up. While curry leaves are undoubtedly widely used in South Indian cuisine, it is not what we know of as the curry flavor. That is cardamom, coriander, cloves, turmeric, and in Asian cuisine, coconut milk and bay leaves. You could walk down the spice aisle of an Indian market and smell each of these and easily see where they play the part. Curry leaves, despite the name, are not the main ingredient of curries. They do not smash curry leaves into a powder to make curry. They do grind cloves into a powder with a pestle, however.

This is not a complete guide. I found some guides and thought I’ll try this video since I’ve seen your other videos and they seemed reasonable. The quick reading I have done before watching this video was much more informative. There are apparently 3 types being standard, dwarf, and midget. The dwarf sounded great to me until I read it’s extra bitter. So, now I’m at the standard and too large or the midget and too small. No mention of any of this here! I’m zone 8b so it won’t grow outside. I know you are in MI and it won’t grow there. So, what is even happening here? I don’t know. You don’t know or just are not saying. Be advised watcher this person is making things up and your plant may die.

I want to grow a curry tree. I will look for “complete guide” elsewhere. I may be 8b, but it rains and is very cold here. It just doesn’t go below 20F ever. Most of winter is above freezing. Most is barely above. Below 25F is extremely rare. Most frosts here are above 28F

Luke, thanks for this video. I have a curry leaf plant in a south facing window inside because it’s too windy outside where I live and it lost all its leaves when I had it out there. It seems much happier inside and flowers and makes seeds every year, but doesn’t produce a lot of branches to harvest leaves from. I’ve started to think that I should maybe top the flowers to prevent it from flowering so I get more leaf growth. Do you have any advice on pruning for more leaf growth and what to do when it goes to seed?

Actually the term "curry" is a catch-all that was bastardized by the British as they occupied India. Curry powder is a mixture, or a masala, of spices and flavors. This plant is used whole leaf, and is a totally different critter than curry powder! It usually is used to flavor dahls and vegetable dishes.
